There is something intangible about a coach being physically able to demonstrate techniques without hurting or embarassing himeself. Sometimes it's just not enough to say what you want to see ... sometimes you need to show them how it's done!

My son skated at Gary Dineen's summer camps. Lincoln Flagg would explain how he wanted the drill or exercise to be performed ... but until the college players demontrated the kids were clueless.

There's also something worth a coach being able to do his job on the sidelines and not from the 12 floor. The athletes' ability to read the anger/pride/urgency in the coaches' eyes and voice in invaluable compared to a student Offensive Quality Control Assistent relaying a message from over the phone.

Student Quality Control: "Uh. Adam? Coach D says you're...ummm...opening your hips to early. Uhhh, he says you're telegraphing the pass. Do you know what that means?"

Ryan Wirth: "What are you talking about? My name's Ryan. I play defensive line, not offensive line."

I love watching this video. This is the energy and enthusiasm we've been missing.

I tell ya man, TJW just has the "it" factor you want in a coach. GDL has the opposite of "it".

He isn't just replacing DeLeone...there was another coach on the staff that was moved to bring in TJ. Don't be surprised if we see a HUGE improvement at be WR position this fall.

This is another huge point that many overlook. WR has just plain not been very good over the years. This was a very good staff shift.

Agree toughest thing about coach P and D is they can't transfer their knowledge to the players effectively. And enthusiasm doesn't seem present.

Couldn't agree more about the first part. I think that's the key to Ollie's motivation --if you can't do it in practice he will.

TJ has a lot to work with our receiving corps. I hope these guys really explode onto the National scene as the talent is there it just has to be maximized along with the QB. We weren't getting our doors blown in going 5-7 the last 2 years. This could be a fun year and Warde getting the change at OC will play a big part.

i think the word you're looking for to describe GDL's intangibles rhymes with 'it'

Wow. I have goose pimples watching this video and dreaming of what he can do with our talented WR group. I hope GDL's offensive line can give our QBs time to get the ball out!

Aside: I wonder if Warde would pull a mid-season coaching change should we start off 1-4 and, if so, would Weist be in line to be the next HC?

I was guessing that as a possibility but weist hasn't been hc in a while so let's see what he can do first.

Agreed. I'm getting way ahead of myself but I wouldn't be surprised if this is Warde's contingency plan. Let's just say UConn starts off 1-4 but the offense shows life and energy. I'd say Warde pulls the trigger, names Weist interim coach and tells him if he finishes the season winning more than he loses, he gets an extension.

More I read about the offense more hope I'm getting. Saw this posted the other day and hope we'll see it here. . . ..also UConn crank out of video of TJ coaching people up

I'm fired up too but I totally disgree about sharing too much with the public. Our playbook is sacred and should only be shared with those responsible for executing it on gameday.

I remember a local story about a stolen high school playbook. I was only like 4 years old but some HS chick named Marcia became involved with Jerry Rogers, a quarterback for the Fairview team. Fairview was Marcia's brother Greg's biggest rival. Greg immediately told Marcia the only reason Jerry was dating her was so he could steal Greg's playbook, a notion Marcia scoffed at. No one was "scoffing" when Jerry was caught redhanded trying to steal Westdale's best plays.

To this day no one knows if Greg was more upset with Jerry for trying to steal the playbook or because he punched Marcia's big girl card before he could.

Surprised I'm the only one who remembers this. It was all over TV back in the day.

Please forgive this dumb question but can Weist call timeouts or does that have to be Coach P? As we all know time management is not one of PP's best attributes.

Great Media day question. Chances of it being asked are slim to none.

Not really. It's an official rule -- anybody can look it up. From what I've seen, any players and head coaches can call timeouts. Assistants cannot. Though presumably TJ Weist could say, "Hey Paul, we should call a timeout."

Good point but he is probably going to be up in the coaches box so it's unlikely

I would say If he feels a to is necessary I am sure he would radio to coach p who could call it
