I thought there is more of a process to select the NIT now. In the old days I believe they would absolutely try to set up a UConn/Syracuse matchup at MSG to try to sell more tickets.

It does. Regular season champs that didn't win their tournament and the first 4 out receive auto bids. After that, I'm not sure how they pick the teams.
