"When I came to Syracuse back in 1982, we were an independent," he said. "For me, whenever I've always thought about eastern football, Penn State, West Virginia. For a long period of time, Penn State was one of our rivals, if not our biggest rival. For me, when it went into conferences, the Big East, people have asked me this question quite a bit.
"As soon as it started and Penn State started to move and make some decisions, for me, growing up as a young player in the Northeast, the dream of a truly Northeastern football conference, I knew would not occur.
