Both teams were super cold until Hannah Jump started hitting 3s. She has four in all and then Haley Jones added another to give Stanford a 35-18 lead at the half.

What a difference a day makes for Stanford. Against Cal Baptist at times they couldn't buy an outside bucket. They started this one cold but Jump blew the game open for them.

43 of their 77 points from a pair of freshmen--Jump and Jones. It's looking like you never know what you'll get from game to game w/ Stanford, both as a team and each of the individual players.

Win or lose, happy to see MSU getting the opportunity to play Stanford. One of the few perennial powers of women's BBall that the Bulldogs haven't faced since Vic brought the program to some prominence.

Also seems like a complete toss up to me. Either team winning by 15 or so seems possible if somebody gets hot, but a back and forth battle seems likely.

Agreed. While I obviously wanted Stanford to beat Syracuse in and of itself, I would have been really sad to miss out on this opportunity to see how both teams are stacking up.

The most fascinating thing about this Stanford team is how different it looks depending on the opponent. In this sense, Tara must be having one of her more enjoyable seasons in ages; Tara often analogizes strategizing and scouting basketball to chess, and she's playing with close to a full set of chess pieces. Rather than one Queen who can do it all (last season, Alanna Smith), she's got a ton of different pieces that can do a few things really well, and that warrant subbing in and out depending on the opposition and its defensive sets.

I am not at all surprised Jump had a huge game last night - she is a 3 point assassin who is solid but not spectacular on defense, so she's perfect for teams that play zone and don't get too physical on offense. I am almost certain she will have a minimal presence against MSU, because we'll need solid ball handlers comfortable against the press and physical presence inside, and she provides neither of those.

If I had to guess, I'm assuming Belibi, Wilson, and the Hulls will get more playing time and Jones and Jump less. To me, the key here is two things: 1) Stanford bigs have to stay out of foul trouble (since we only have 3), and 2) Carrington is really ideally suited to play against a team like MSU, so whether she suits up might very well be the difference.

Either way, really looking forward to this matchup and hoping for a close contest down the stretch. Vic is one of my favorite WCBB coaches and one of its best tacticians, so it's great to finally see him and Tara match up. And frankly, we owe him payback for the role he played coaching A&M's defense against us in the 2011 FF game. That one still burns...

State seems to be struggling defending the 3 point line for large stretches of games this season. I expect Tara will take full advantage of this tendency.

Bibby and Jackson showed some life from 3 yesterday, so hopefully that's a new wrinkle for opponents to deal with. At some point this season I'm expecting Bibby to get really hot from deep and explode for 30 or so. She's an outstanding shooter and really tough to defend out there with her height and high release.

Excited for the game and to see Stanford's talented lineup.

Well, it looked like Lexie Hull was on a roll until these last few games, but I expect she's the one to watch out for anyways. And despite Jump being a zone shooter, I think anyone shooting that hot is dangerous.

I think the fact that you don't know the Stanford team you're gonna get does give Tara one advantage. Still, both teams are deep. Last night, Stanford had Jump and Jones doing most of the work where Danberry, Bibby, and Jackson were combined 22-34 from the field for 57 points. It looks like Danberry is on a roll, so I suspect she's our best bet. I think she'll have to work around the shot blockers of Stanford but I trust she's learned how to do that.... somewhat at least. Though I think Jackson has a longer extension with her arm that could help, but those 2 definitely need to finish around the rim.

Jackson is coming on at a great time. I think she's our next best bet, because she's inherently hard to defend so it'll be interesting who's gonna get on her. Carrington I would guess is the best option, though Jackson might have a few inches on her.

We could use Espinoza-Hunter right about now, so I hope she's shaken whatever she had last night off. If we lose the 3-point shooting battle against Stanford, hopefully we win the turnover battle because obviously everyone knows we usually win that. But Stanford is deeper than an average team, so they should have some good ball handlers on that roster.

Jones is going to play a whole bunch vs MSU. I won't be surprised if she starts many games for Stanford this season. Any team that plays zone vs Stanford is going to meet Hannah Jump. She is one impressive zone buster. I'm very intrigued by this game today. MSU defense will be tested, and, I especially want to see MSU defense vs Stanford offense in the half-court. MSU offense will also be tested, as Stanford defense seems to be incrementally improving each game.

The edge goes to Mississippi State if both Carrington and Dodson are unavailable, not to mention Fingall nowhere near 100%. Stanford looked in control against Syracuse but that was a different type of matchup. The struggles against Gonzaga and Cal Baptist are more telling of where this team is with key players out or on limited minutes.

We've been missing a clutch zone buster since Lou's big sis Karlie graduated, and TBH, Jump may already be better at that - her 8 made threes are second best all time for Stanford, and better than Karlie ever had in a single game, and she's only 7 games into her freshman year and playing with a broken nose. (For now, I still think Karl is/was the better defender.)

I'm beginning to think Shannon Coffee's zorro mask has mystical properties. She was a high post three-point assassin with that mask (esp. both times she played against Baylor!), and now Jump seems to be shooting daggers with it.

Incidentally, one of my all-time favorite comments from any coach was Mulkey's post-game commentary on Coffee's prowess against Baylor: "Someone should whisper 'Baylor' in Coffee's ear before every game."

"Piranhas on a roast" has gotta be on that favorite comments list too...

I believe Tara told Coffee that they were playing “the Bears” before every game after that performance-whether they were bears or ducks!
