I guess, by that logic, if tickets to women's basketball were free, every game would sell out :)

no, but some schools sell women's BB season tickets for next to nothing (<$50.) and count season ticket holders every game, even though they attend a few games each year

There are several mens programs where you must donate thousands of dollars just for the opportunity to purchase a ticket. If a ticket cost $5 or $55 it is a big factor in how many are sold.

I'm confused as to what you are saying. I get both your points, but I'm not sure what they portend.

Women's basketball tix are quite cheap at quite a few schools - and still, few are sold except to folks who are going to attend the games. More to the point, they still don't sell a lot of tix. In general women's basketball attendance isn't very good, as the chart shows. At the schools where it is, and certainly the few schools with "better" women's attendance, I don't really think the numbers are being faked. I've been to Notre Dame and they do sell out, for example.

As to the Men's teams where you have to donate to purchase tickets (more accurately, usually, "good" tickets) - these are precisely the programs that DO have good attendance.

And yes, some schools count season tix whether you are there or not, and others don't. But most likely, do it for both Men's and Women's program.

There are a few schools where the women out draw men, and there are several schools that distort attendance for recruiting purposes. The article implies the interest in womens basketball is close to mens, it is not. It is growing, but it is the mens basketball tickets sales, and revenue that is vital to most athletic programs.
