A majority of Power 5 athletic leaders who participated in a recent survey were "very or somewhat likely" to support the creation of a fourth division within the NCAA for the Power 5 conferences to compete in sports other than basketball, according to data released Tuesday by the Knight Commission for Intercollegiate Athletics.

Reminder: official team practice begins tomorrow.

Yeah that fourth division is their own independent league of the two to three dozen big money schools where they would no longer be encumbered by the NCAA's byzantine rules and regulations.

Exactly, this is going to be used as a vehicle for Power 5s to pay players.

There are a lot of "Power 5" schools that aren't successful in sports and are just being dragged along since they were already members of a conference. Do they get to participate even though they aren't competitive?

I'd say no, but who knows how it would shake out since this is all hypothetical. I imagine the new league being comprised of the top half of each P5 conference. Maybe a little less so you end up with 25-30 teams that divide into regional divisions. In other words, it looks like a typical pro league, and like a pro league, will pay their players. My stab at a new league mixing football and basketball schools while vying for big TV markets and regional balance...
