From last week:

http://www.cbssports.com/collegefoo...midweek-notes-big-east-hoping-for-orange-bowl

The Big East makeover won't necessarily end with conference realignment and expansion. The conference hopes to remain relevant by grabbing a spot in the Orange Bowl.

“We're working hard on some access,” said an official who did not want to be identified because of the sensitive nature of the talks. “I've been talking to some people regarding the Orange Bowl. I think they're fair-minded people to gain some measure of access. Ultimately, I think we've got a shot to do that.”

The OB was never happening. The loss of the Auto-bid is directly linked to the the BCS bowls, especially the OB not wanting BE teams and there woeful travelling history, though I still think we would have packed the place.

We are reverting to the old bowl alliance system, for those who remember.

That was decided long before he arrived. Nobody was going to make that happen. Calling it a strike vs Aresco is really dumb. Monumentally dumb.

Then what do you call the Big East official who was still working on getting the Big East access just one week ago? Monumentally dumb? Incredibly naive? Stupid?

a failed miracle worker...if you are the ACC why would you grant the conference you are trying to destroy access to your contract bowl?

A liar. Or a publicist, but I repeat myself.

If Edsall had installed a passing game this never would have happened. Damn Edsall.

If only the commissioner could sell a Big East football team over an SEC or Big 10 team to a bowl game. I bet the Orange Bowl hates having 20,000 Michigan or Tennessee fans show up - don't they know Cincinnati might be 3 slots higher in the computer poll some season?

Why would the Orange bowl consider the BE when they don't even have a tv deal in place, there's still a lot of re-alignment possibilities out there and the BE is still very unstable.

Let's see how the BE does next year, we may be able to create out own bowl, not likely, but who knows.

"The Atlantic Coast Conference and Orange Bowl are finalizing a deal that would pit the ACC champion against either Notre Dame, an SEC or Big Ten team starting after the 2014 regular season, sources told ESPN."

Looks like Plan B for BE bowl tie ins. Anyone know what Plab B is?

No way is the Aresco's fault this is all Swofford.

The Big East might barely exist by the 2014 Orange Bowl. It already barely exists.

It will be the SEC#6, or B1G#5 vs. ACC#1. And I won't be watching.

The BE is on life support and the plug is hanging from the socket. Until those with their heads in the sand recognize this reality, there will always be plenty of excuses. This applies equally to Herbst and Manuel. Until they get something done that substantially improves UConn's position ( either through the BE or by leaving) they have done nothing. They get paid to deliver. The rest is just BS excuse making and feel good self delusion.

This is pretty much where I'm at. We wont know for sure until the BE TV deals worked out, but I'm starting to have serious doubts myself.

Patience lads, patience. What looks like a doomed conference today will look a lot better once the dust settles(new teams in & conference re-alignment subsides) and everyone starts playing each other for a few years. The Texas teams WILL improve their programs, so will the Florida teams. UConn will improve, so will Temple, Cincy and Louisville. You just have to give it time to develop and we don't have a choice anyways so lets just make the best of it. So we don't play in the Orange Bowl. Who's to say that a few years down the road we don't play in a new bowl in the Cowboys new stadium or Giants stadium? Who says that they stop at 4 for the playoff system? If they go to 8, which is quite likely, that will be the new goal. I'm sure Coach P and Ward Manuel will have us playing some of our traditional rivals in the future(Cuse, Pitt, BC, possibly Penn St). Our fan base will grow and so will the traveling crowd which makes us more appealing to teams like Michigan and Ohio St. Right now the only thing we need to worry about is winning football games and traveling well. We do both of those and everything else will work out just fine. Patience please.

The Lone Star Bowl at Cowboys Stadium. The best available Texas school vs the best available Big East school. Just a thought.

Wow! Like of like the old BlueBonnet Bowl played on New Year's Eve that nobody really watched. Not even the Cotton Bowl that was once a New's Day fixture, huh? Wow! How about the "The Old Yankee Conference Bowl" played up in Burlington Vermont? The best available Vermont school vs the the best available Big East school. Better yet, how bout involving Senators and Congressmen from California, Texas, Florida, Ohio, Kentucky, Idaho, Connecticut, New Jersey and Pennsylvania and getting them involve in dissembling this obvious attempt to create an SEC,PAC12,Big12, Big 12 oligopoly.

Ok ... Genius ... what's your Plan?

Again: We are at Daybreak of a new era ... and several networks are making noise that they want our games as content. If ... NBC (or Fox etc) pay us in excess of $10m per School, we have the necessary juice to play in this industry. For all the moaning around here, I have never heard anything more intelligent than #BegHarder. We aren't getting B1G nor ACC interest at this stage ... and imho, we need to get that 35,000 attendance to a more robust fanbase. It is about Football.

I agree with this... This is a big difference between Nebraska and West Virginia and us... We play in a generally full 40k seat stadium, and they play in full 80k and 60k seat stadiums respectively. To me, it doesn't seem to be only about TV markets. However, the selections of Pitt and Syracuse to the ACC have me scratching my head, unless it is based on potential (65k and 50k fields).

I'm certainly not calling for an expansion to the Rent at this time, but I really think we would be more attractive if we played in a consistently full 50k+ stadium coupled with on field success and the potential for TV market.

And before anyone calls me out on it, I am buffaloed by the inclusion of BC, except that they really were stupid enough to think they bought the Boston market.

Hey UConn is what it is.... a developing D-1 program lucky enough to be invited into one of the 6 best conferences in the country. And guess what? We're still that!! So instead of sitting around wringing your hands and pouting because you didn't get invited across the street where the grass isn't any greener make the best of what you have and support the team and the conference. Geez what is wrong with you guys? This conference has a lot going for it. There is some excellent football to watch and support coming in the next few years. The basketball conference picks up Memphis, Houston and Temple and they all have had success and a following. SMU had a very good football team at one time and I'm sure their alumni are just itching for those days to return. Once they start knocking off the other Texas teams watch that snowball grow into another TCU or Boise St. The Big East has a new leader in Aresco and I believe this guy has the connections and the panache to make a silk purse out of this. Plus we don't even know who else is coming to the Big East that will further enhance the football side. BYU? Utah? Air Force? All three? That could completely change the perception of this conference and guarantee we are included in bowl invites and playoff bids.

If anything it might be time to start putting some pressure on teams like Providence, Depaul and Seton Hall to start pulling their weight as far as OOC games/wins and national tourney appearances/attendances go or hit the road. Maybe it's time to trim some of the dead weight that ends up hindering the over all conference rating.

But instead some of you guys will whine and complain about anything and everything. It's always "can't", "won't", "never" with you guys and anyone with a sense of hope for the future is simply delusional. I don't buy it. With the right people in place the Big East can be a top 4 conference in any sport. Just give it the time and support it needs.
