From KML's freaky elbow injury to Morgan Tuck's sudden knee surgery, this has been a weird first 10 games for UConn. The good news is players have stepped up big time and the team has met every challenge. Here are some strange, but true, statistics to pass the time until we face Duke on Dec. 17th:

1. Brianna Banks is the team's leading 3 pt shooter at 44%. Oddly, she also shooting 44% from the free throw line.

2. The only player in the "regular rotation" with single digit turnovers (8) and personal fouls (9) is a freshman. Saniya Chong.

3. UConn has more made free throws (129) than personal fouls (115).

4. Opponents have blocked 22 UConn shots this season. Stewie (31), Stokes (27) and Dolson (23) each have more than that total.

5. The best shooter on the team is Kiah Stokes with 65% from the field and 82% from the free throw line.

6. Stef Dolson has more assists (40) than Banks & Chong combined (37) despite playing 125 fewer minutes.

7. UConn has made more 3 pt. baskets (72) than opponents have made free throws (61).

8. All four guards in the "regular rotation" have more steals than turnovers. Combined, they have 51 turnovers in 1,040 minutes of game time. That is one turnover every 20.4 minutes.

9. Stokes, Banks and Chong (back-up center, recovering from ACL surgery and freshman) have 25% of UConn's points (220), 30% of the rebounds (130) and 36% of the blocked shots (32).

10. Stewie, who leads the team in scoring, has 37 pts from free throws and only 33 pts from the 3 pt stripe. Hartley, 2nd in scoring, has only 18 from free throws, but 48 from 3's.

11. Saniya Chong is 2nd on the team in made 3's (14) and has made 68.4% of her shots inside the 3 point line.

Nice, but isn't Kia one of those 11-foot women that can just reach out from the FT line and drop the ball in the basket?

The scarcity of TOs is certainly one of the keys to the year so far.

I would argue the scarcity of fouls is even more important.

Absolutely. Especially with only a 7 player (6 in the last game) rotation.

The better coaches teach their players based on the new rules. No one has done that better than Geno.

Mulkey and Mitchell, not so much.

DAV: Signed on just to express appreciation for this date.....immensely interesting to me and quite a few "wow" reactions going thru your list. #3 somehow does not surprise me......but virtually everything else here elicited a wow, grin, smile, raised eyebrow or all the above.

When the rules surrounding flow were revisited I said that this would hurt opponents more than UCONN because they are so fundamentally sound defensively moving their feet. The #3 stats are proving that reality.
