This team is constantly being compared to last years team, which got compared to 23 which was compared to some Calhoun teams, etc... All those teams are different.
Here's a game to give us a little perspective.

Choose from these categories:
1) tv shows/movies
2) bands
3) sports teams

Where some seemingly drastic changing of the guard actually led to either no change in quality/or an upgrade.

Me? I prefer cheers with Rebecca and Woody. Sorry Diane and Coach.

I also like don't think that ac/dc got any worse without Bon Scott and YES' Drama is one of my fave prog albums

Pink Floyd got considerably better with David Gilmour over Syd Barrett.

Genesis and Peter Gabriel. Both achieved greater heights after the split. The flip side of that would be Van Halen and Sammy Hagar, who both got much worse after the merger.
My two favorite Genesis albums are Abacab and Foxtrot. Feet in both eras.

Now someone tell me they like Gary Cherone the best...I dare you.

The great Ted McGinley as Jefferson replacing Steve Rhoades on Married with Children.

Not sure if a direct replacement but Taxi getting rid of Randall Carver and adding Chistopher Lloyd as Reverend Jim.

As for comparing teams. The UConn team last season is the best college basketball team of the modern era. Comparing this team to them isn't fair and will leave you disappointed no matter what this team accomplishes.

what?!!! Blaspheme!!

M*A*S*H
In each case I believe there was an overall downgrade. The show changed dramatically over its 11 year run.

# episodes - character

72 - Trapper John
183 - BJ Hunnicutt

70 - Henry Blake
782 - Sherman T Potter

118 - Frank Burns
133 - Charles Emerson Winchester III

The Office
There was no replacing the legendary world's best boss. In a unique twist though, the replacements were all already successful actors and played much different roles, which was a smart move. They were all different from Michael Scott and great characters. Thought they were all great while totally different than Michael Scott. They all did quite well filling the void. That's what she said.

Michael Scott - Steve Carell
Charles Miner - Idris Elba
Deangelo Vickers - Will Ferrell
Robert California - James Spader

James Bond!
Sean Connery . . . Daniel Craig

Sean Connery was the master of course but I really like Daniel Craig the best. The movies are very different today, more serious and less campy.

Robert California was a very obnoxious character. Definitely not in the 'different but still great' category.

Law and Order. Adam Schiff over all other DAs. Lenny Briscoe over all others detectives.

I love his character and JS in general.
I thought the will Ferrell character was absolutely useless though

Michael Scott is the best comedy tv show character of all-time IMO so the show was doomed once Carell left. I thought Elba and in particular Ferrell stunk but Spader saved things as Robert California, he was great.

We saw what the show would've been like had they gone with Odenkirk over Carell and it would've worked.

I might go with any of these before I chose Michael Scott (although he is great).

Kramer.
Lucy.
Barney Fife.
Al “I scored four touchdowns in a single game, not a whole season mind you, but a single game” Bundy.
Eric Cartman
Bill McNeal (Phil Hartman)
Karen (Will and Grace)
Barney (how I Met your mother)
Arther Spooner
Joey
Bill Cosby

Roger from American Dad. Cartman is a close second.

I'm sure there are people who never accepted an American version without Ricky Gervais.

Still, there are more people than not who listened to & loved Roxy Music without Brian Eno, the Rolling Stones without Brian Jones, Television without Richard Hell, the Wailers without Peter Tosh, Electric Light Orchestra without Roy Wood, though I never imagined Little Feat would survive Lowell George's death.

My current great joy as a UConn MBB fan is watching one game at a time, and tracking how the coaches & players make adjustments and develop across the season. It makes much of this basis for this thread irrelevant.

Niles Crane
Ted Baxter
Sheldon Cooper
I thought I wrote Sheldon on my list, but I absolutely forgot Ted Baxter, and while Ted Knight was great as Ted Baxter, he would be in the top three as Henry Rush. I might include George Jefferson from the Jeffersons on my list also.

I always trusted Bryan Ferry and Manzanera to make great records. I'm glad Richard Hell and ENO left or we'd never have their solo stuff. Tosh needed his own band, The Move sound nothing like Secret messages ELO but both these bookends and everything in between is classic. And...Representing the Mambo happens to be my 2nd favorite feat record (my favorite: Little Feat-the first one)

Thx for letting me talk about this stuff (I can't with a straight face pretend that Keith and Mick aren't the Rolling Stones)

5150 was great. Downhill after that.

Robert California's pool party at his mansion stands out as an all-time episode.

We got a little derailed here and I think this post qualifies. Keeping on the topic of replacements.

I am by no means a fan of this group, but Drew Bledsoe was replaced by a guy who turned out to have a pretty good career.
