2020 Olympics. She hopes she can play 5 x 5 and 3 x 3. Breanna Stewart wants to play 5-on-5 and 3-on-3 in Tokyo

"Recent Olympic women’s basketball tournaments have run from Day 1 through Day 15 of the Games. If that remains, it’s hard to imagine players taking part in the traditional 5-on-5, then switching to a 3-on-3 game, and then back again."

I think we should spread the wealth and have other very good players on the 3 x 3 team and in addition, field more than 1 team like women's beach volleyball. USA vs USA would possibly be the best competition left.

I like the idea of entering 2 teams for each country in the 3x3 competition. Separate teams for the 3x3 from the 5x5. Give as many players a chance for the Olympic experience as possible.

I like the idea of 2 teams per nation, as in Beach VB. The USA may be the only nation with sufficient depth.

I think players should play in only one at a time. They should tell USA BB their preference.

If we get 12 on the regular team and 2 teams of 4, that would be 20 players. We could go farther down the talent ladder and possibly have less controversy. Possibly. :)

If another nation stacked their 3 x 3 team at the expense of the regular team, they could really compete.

Best players only. Why in Womens sports do people say give everyone a chance to play. Are they going to start giving out participation medals , too.

Oh man. If Stewie makes both teams then we'll really hear it from the Candace Clique.

No difference between the men and women. I would want multiple 3 x 3 mens teams and different participants. Only difference is the large number of men who want no part of the olympics in any format

I can handle it. Suspect most around here could and get some shadenfreude out of it. But, seriously, players should have to choose which. The IOC also suggested that 3 x 3 teams would be comprised of "specialists", though I don't know how they would make a rule to insure that.

Two teams of 3 players each and one team of 12 players for a total of 18 players. I think the pool of talent in WBB can easily find 18 players without some players competing in both sports.

USA has enough talent to field both teams. There are often more than enough players who didn't make the team who are as good or sometimes even better than some of the ones that did. We are not just talking about college here, but also the pro's. Let some of the Vets who want to play that extra Olympic try out for the 3x3 team. It will give them a different experience and open up a spot for many new qualified players to play 5x5.

Yes there is a difference between them. Men players grow up playing 2 on 2 or 3 on 3 but not alot of womens players do. It is a different game. Megan Walkers team didnt win gold when she played in a 3 on 3 Tournament.

Well, I know one female player who said she played 3 x 3. (from the attached article) ;)
“Growing up playing basketball, you play 3-on-3,” Stewart said before her Storm lost to the New York Liberty at Madison Square Garden on Sunday. “You go to the [YMCA], you play 3-on-3. It highlights people’s skill a lot more because it’s only six players on the court. It’s how you can be better than the defender.”

Out in South Bend, Skylar Diggins also played a lot of half court, as did Jewell Loyd in Chicago vs. her brother and friends.

I don't know how they'd make rule to ensure it but this quote from a "Business Insider" article caught my eye:

'Additionally, shooting is important. Of course, shooting is always important in competitive basketball, but with a game only lasting for 10 minutes and going to 21 points, the stakes of every shot are raised exponentially. As Matt Santangelo, a former Gonzaga guard and executive director of Hoopfest, the largest 3-on-3 basketball tournament in the world, recently told Bleacher Report, "Shooting is really at a premium in 3-on-3, more so than in the NBA, because in these games you can't hide on the floor. If you're open, you absolutely must hit the shot. If you don't, you lose."'

And the games are fast: 12-second shot clock. Good shooters that have stamina, move quickly back and forth. Some thoughts and/or guidelines, but certainly not rules. Apparently, The 2020 Olympic 3-on-3 tournaments will include eight men’s teams and eight women’s teams, so it appears countries will only get one team this time around. With the U.S. Talent pool, guessing that the players on these teams will be different from those on the larger court.

Here in Bozeman, MT there is a charity street/outdoor 3 x 3 tournament that is immensely popular, drawing teams from all over. I suspect there are such events throughout the US. Is there one in your area?

The ND Club of northern New Jersey sponsors an alumni version of the Bookstore Basketball Tournament that's full-court (it's used for local fund raising for a chosen charity(ies)). There are some local three-on-three tourneys as well, but I have not attended them. You raise a good point about the three-on-three...might be easier to run that than the full-court games.
