Steve Herbst is the man who just negotiated what is, according to the Sports Business Journal, $8.2 billion in television contracts for the racing circuit.
Herbst, 46, is NASCAR’s vice president of broadcasting and production.
Herbst graduated from the University
of Massachusetts in 1988 and went to work at the NBA as a public relations intern. He left the league for a while, then returned for an internship in broadcasting. He called his 19 years there “a long and fun run” that included the launch of NBA TV (for which he was general manager) and “NBA Inside Stuff” (coordinating producer). From there, he went to CBS for 2½ years, starting in 2008.
In 2011, NASCAR hired him, and he rolled up his sleeves and went to work. Last October, he led the negotiation of an eight-year, multiplatform deal with Fox Sports. In July he signed a 10-year deal with NBC Sports Group (both deals beginning in 2015), and in August he negotiated an agreement that added three Sprint Cup races and 14 Nationwide Series races and two years to the Fox deal.
Herbst is one of three children who grew up in a household where being up on current events, watching the local and national news, was a big deal. His father was a lifelong IBMer in Fishkill and Poughkeepsie; his mom, a teacher in the Lakeland school district for nearly 40 years.
Brother Jeffrey is the president of Colgate University. Sister Susan is the president of the University of Connecticut.
