3rd major of the year....only the British Open left...in July.

Coverage:
Thursday 9:30- 2:00 USA Tournament is at The Country Club near Boston...olde style course...gorgeous.
2:00- 5:00 NBC
5:00-7:00 USA
Friday 9:30-4:00 USA
4:00-7:00 NBC
Saturday 12:00-8:00 NBC
Sunday 10:00-12:00 USA
12:00-7:00 NBC

The subplot...sometimes bubbling above ground... is that the USGA is permitting golfers
who have qualified to play to enter...including several who have been banned by the PGA for playing in the
LIV event last week in London....the Saudi government-backed event. That list includes Mickelson/Dustin
Johnson and Bryson DeChambeau. The USGA...not the PGA...runs this event. Next week in the annual and very popular
Hartford-area event those same players will not be allowed to play....it IS run by the PGA. I see that our very own Paige will be in attendance at some special event in the Cromwell event.

PGA/LIV/USGA/players...only sure winners will be attorneys as this kerfluffle proceeds.

Adam Hadwin..Canadian...journeyman type...sole leader at 4 under 66.
Top of leader board very much bunched.
25 players under par.....41 at even or better.
Mix of big names/no-names....in the mix McIlroy at 67
Rahm and Justin Thomas at 69....couple of amateurs near the top.

Shooting himself out of the tournament...Mickelson with a 78.
Commentators said this was probably the easiest the course would play.
Hopefully no rain which would speed up greens and fairways.

Probably anybody at even or better feels they are in decent shape.
That 41 number seems unusually high for the U.S. Open.

Ha, I'd prefer 'lesser known' to 'no-name,' but otherwise much appreciated! Each of those guys has a strong resume, just not so much on the world stage.

Thanks, Blake, for the preview and Round One update... hope all is going well for you in the upstate NY hinterland!

After 36 holes:
Leaders at 5 under...Morikawa and Dahman [Dahman...really?]
Bunched at the top...23 are under par...easily close enough to make a weekend run.

Stars and journeymen abound.
Morikawa is great ball-striker but was scattery all day long...except his scatters led to a 4 under 66.
Hit the ball as he usually does...we got the winner?
Rahm at 4 under...just SO powerful...with a darned short backswing to boot...defending U.S. Open champ.
McIIroy at 4 under...sweetest swing in the game with the driver...coming off a win last week....has not
won a major in 8 years...seems super fired up...just needs to chill after occasional bad shot...becoming a [the?] player leader in the PGA versus LIV squabble.
Sheffler at 3 under...current world #1.

Should be a great weekend of golf...much cooler temps...breezy.

Tough day Saturday...wind/rough/Open pressure...higher scores.
Great first page of the leaderboard...studs/future studs/a surprise or two.

Zalatoris/Fitzpatrick at 4 under.
Rahm at 3 under
Bradley/Scheffler at 2 under.
McIIroy at one under.

Sunday weather: rain in the morning...cool temps...significant wind again.
Rain softens greens...widens fairways....a bit easier.
Rough tougher.
Open pressure...should be exciting come late Sunday afternoon.

Keep an eye on Zalatoris...young...no PGA wins so far...consistently has challenged in majors...great ball
striker...future stud.

Trivia: Keegan Bradley is a huge local favorite...lots of New England ties.
Aunt is Pat Bradley from Mass....retired LPGA HOF'er.
His wife is a niece of Red Soxer Carlton Fisk...i.e. THE homer guy in game 6 of World Series.
Nickname of Pudge. What do nieces and nephews call him? What else? Uncle Pudge.

Thanks again for carrying the weight for your fellow golfers this week, Blake.

Good job with your Carnac-quality account of things at Brookline. I'm guessing from your words that you're picking Wake's Will Z. As a fellow Deacon, that'd be great with me. I love the leaderboard, including Fitz, whose brother, Alex, had caddied as a 14-year-old for Matthew when he won the U.S. Am at The Country Club in 2013.

In spite of his double on the 54th hole, I've got to to go with Rahm. Defending is a tough haul, but I believe he'll be up to the task. And then there's Scheffler, who alternates between Jekyll and Hyde with his performance. I'll be rooting for Rory, but the swing betrayed him yesterday and it's unlikely he'll step out of character to play well in a brisk wind.

Good job explaining the Bradley clan. Pat's brother, John, was a fellow member of mine at Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown, Mass. for a few years about a decade ago. We never played together but were friends, and spent plenty of time watching the PGA tournaments from Taconic's historic 19th hole.

Enjoy the day, Blake, and fellow golfers... we can be sure it'll be memorable no matter the outcome. Happy Father's Day, one and all!

Deacon: I could not access you off-board. I was able to read what you sent but it did not allow me to respond.

BTW: very impressed that you were a member of Taconic! Just got to play it once...loved it.

Thanks, Blake. Still a member at Taconic but, in my 57th season playing there, the scores are creeping upward. It's funny how the hills are getting steeper and the holes longer each season.

Still it's one of the very best New Engand courses, always ranked as one of the best two or three college courses anywhere, and always a joy to play (nine rounds so far this year).

By the way, as a Deacon it was disappointing to see Will Z fall just short again today, but I'm a big fan of and happy for Matthew Fitzpatrick.

Pretty cool, too, that Wake's Jen Kupcho won again today on the LPGA tour, beating Nelly Korda and Irishwoman Leona Maguire in a playoff.
