Dartmouth announced they are eliminating 5 sports and permantly closing their on campus golf course. COVID is providing cover for schools to do things that they have wanted to do for some time.
I love the golf course up at Dartmouth. That’s a damn shame.

Even gets international recognition. This is not good, at all.
Dartmouth's golf course is located on campus and the college has been eyeing the land for expansion for years. Thus, they are using the COVID crisis as cover for a decision they have been wanting to make for years. I think you will see more colleges do similar things.

Well, Stanford opened up over 200 enrollment slots to non-athletes. Seems to suit trends.

It's as if college ADs are become smaller to suit widely recognized professional circuits that exist.

So, in theory, by eliminating varsity sports and scholarships (knowing most of these sports weren't a 1:1 student to scholarship ratio) and reducing them to club status, Stanford has decreased an athletic dept cost and now has students paying to continue their Stanford education? Brilliant!

There is another twist to what Dartmouth is doing. By eliminating 5 sports, Dartmouth will be able to offer more admission spots to non-athletes. The Ivies have typically had a higher number of students participating in sports than the average college and ~25% of Dartmouth students participate in intercollegiate athletics.

Like so many things, Covid-19 is being used as an excuse to do what organizations wanted to do anyways. It gives them cover.
