Says the situation was dire before the pandemic - $12 million budget deficit. Deficit expected to go to $25 million, "best case" [presumably meaning if they play a whole football season?].

- The 11 sports being cut affect 240 current student athletes and 22 coaches.
- Stanford has 20 national championships and 27 Olympic gold medalists in these sports.
- They will honor all scholarship commitments and coaching contracts.

Someone help me find the dislike button! I fear Stanford will be the first of many to make these hard decisions. If $tanford is hard up, imagine state schools like UCLA, Cal, etc.

Don't mistake what this is. This is a choice that Stanford made, not something that they were forced to do. Stanford has a $28 billion endowment. They have more than enough money to continue field hockey and men's volleyball.

Stanford, which has long boasted one of the most robust collections of varsity sports in the country, will cut 11 of its varsity programs at the conclusion of the 2020-21 academic year as it deals with the ongoing financial ramifications of the coronavirus pandemic. Coaches and athletes were notified of the decision via Zoom conferences on Wednesday.

Wow...that's pretty stunning. Scared for other schools and the fall out ahead. Very sad for those athletes. Definitely puts them in a brutal predicament, either give up playing the sport they love or transfer out of one of the best schools in the country.

UCLA and USC should go rushing by Stanford for number of NCAA Div 1 titles.

Why cut men’s and women’s fencing? It’s the perfect sport for a pandemic. They wear masks. They wear gloves. And if you come closer than 6ft you get poked with stick. :D

When US interest rates go negative like in Europe that $38 billion endowment fund isn't going to generate the income it did prior to our current financial crisis. Maybe we can hold a fundraiser? "Tree Aid"?
