Stanford and UConn WBB history

Stanford has played an important albeit supporting role in some memorable seasons.

• UConn played Stanford in the Final Four semi-finals in 1995, a game many questioned whether UConn could win. UConn crushed the Cardinal 87-60 before beating Tennessee for championship #1.

• In 2007, Stanford upset then #1 Tennessee in OT at Maples. This was the game in which Stanford was so physical with Candace Parker that she couldn't come out for the post game press conference (according to Coach Summitt). (Thankfully Stewie was okay to attend last night's.) Tennessee played Stanford in the national championship game the following April and crushed the Cardinal 64-48. Stanford reached the championship game by beating UConn in the semi-final game. UConn, btw, had defeated Stanford in November of that season in a Virgin Island tournament.

• UConn defeated Stanford in the Final Four semis in 2009 in St Louis before beating Louisville to win championship #6.

• UConn defeated Stanford in December 2009 in a memorable game at the XL center. UConn then defeated Stanford for championship #7 in a not so memorable slugfest in San Antonio.

• Stanford upset preseason #1 Baylor in 2012 and was rewarded with the #1 ranking in the next coaches' poll. Stanford remained #1 until late December 2012 when then #2 UConn crushed the Cardinal 61-35 at Maples (another one of those not-close UConn wins). Neither Stanford nor preseason #1 Baylor made the Final Four that season. UConn overcame 3 earlier losses to ND to win national championship #8.

• UConn played Stanford in Nov 2013 at Gampel and won convincingly, pulling away at the end. UConn then defeated Stanford in the Final Four semis before beating ND for championship #9.

• What will this season bring? UConn has won 3 national championships in seasons in which it lost at least one game. As Carl Adamec points out, however, UConn has never won a national championship after losing a game before January. Should be interesting.

I've read another post on her somwhere - I can remember the old ESPN board used to be similar thought that "Stanford has UCONN's number." This and prior years of data dispels that notion. Stanford has a great coach and puts together gritty teams and every once in while they get it done.

So UCONN is about 7-4 vs Stanford the past 10 years and every so often we hear "Stanford has UCONN's number?" Just sayin sometimes we get a bit spoiled how great this program is that every so often a team like Stanford and a coach lie eTara - we'll hear they have UCONN's number becuase it's so adarn rare UCONN gets beat- even though the great Stanford program is 4-7.
