Spring Recap - The Quarterbacks (John Silver)

Silver has an interesting point about McCummings moving to TE. If he is bigger now...and he is still having issues with the center exchange, plus we have 3 QBs coming in, plus limited TE experience, that may be a good place to take advantage of his athleticism. He is a bit small for a TE...but it is an option. It gets another playmaker on the field who will make a defense think.

Pretty much confirms everyone's thoughts on the current situation. Clark Whidley will be the starter. Backup job is up for grabs. Whitmer reminds me a little of Ryan Nassib at Syracuse. Early in career you could see he had some talent but a combination of a shaky line and his own tendency to throw the ball when he shouldn't led to lots of trouble. By last season he was a very good player. I'm hoping we see the same kind of progress from Whitmer.

From the Silver article:

But, his (McCummings) conditioning isn’t great this spring and the staff would like to see him slim back down.

This observation pisseesss me off.

No way should conditioning or desired weight be an issue for any skill position player four years in to a program. It's either a fail on the staff by not setting clear expectations for him or a fail on his part for not taking the conditioning program seriously.

Either way it's not good.

Agree 100%. We have the best facilities in the country, and this kid's not in shape ???

This is the second quarterback that got out of shape. What the heck is going on? shane day's fault? s and c staff? pasq?

Not thinking it's Jerry Martin (one of the best in the country)..

Sio Moore - "Coach Martin is no joke," Moore said. "You're gonna work and he's gonna make you work harder than you thought you could."

Cochran I get - injured, no chance of playing. McCummings is another story.

No it's the players fault ! Coach can't babysit 24/7.

No, but they can check progress reports and assign additional conditioning drills like stadium stairs at 5am.

It's tracked very, very closely.

"On Monday, Wednesday and Friday, the players had to reserve at least an hour with Martin at the Shenkman Center on campus. Monday and Wednesday were full-body workouts. Friday was upper body with only a little lower body because players would scrimmage on Saturday. "We want to put them in the best possible position," Martin said. "You want the legs recovered so they can show the coaches what they can do.""

Why not make him a real running back? He could actually be used in situations where the whole world didn't know that he was getting the ball and that the play might not be a run.
