The Central Connecticut football season kicks off on Friday night at 6:00 p.m. against Southern Connecticut at Arute Field in New Britain. The Blue Devils will be back on the field for the first time since winning the 2019 Northeast Conference championship. Tonight's season-opener marks the first game for both programs since 2019 after opting out of competing in 2020-21 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Central-Southern: A Connecticut State Rivalry
Central Connecticut opens the season at home vs. D-II Southern Connecticut, CCSU's most played opponent. Central and Southern will meet for the 54th time and Southern holds a 35-18 series advantage. The teams first met on the gridiron in 1949 and played annually through 1999, with just one exception (1963 game was cancelled as the nation mourned JFK). Since CCSU reclassified as a I-AA/FCS program in 1993, Central is 7-3 vs. their rivals from New Haven. The Blue Devils and Owls are meeting for the first time since the 2011 season. CCSU has won the past four meetings, including a 35-21 in the last matchup in 2011.
By comparison, UConn will face Yale for the 50th time this year.
Unfortunately, no tailgating at CCSU due to COVID, and limited capacity in the stadium. This is sucks because a home opener, combined with good weather an an in-state rival, would have led to a great atmosphere and capacity crowds
