I don't think it hurt that the award is Given by the Atlanta Tipoff Club and Raven lives there - and has won 3 straight Georgia state championships with a 4th pending this weekend.

This award comes from the Basketball HOF. You know James Naismith basketball HOF. This not in GA . What are you speaking of?

Seems like the dry banner jokes are giving way to even drier Nike ball jokes.

Oh man my bad. I agree that a Natl. Organization should not be located in Atlanta and Paige Bueckers should not have gotten the award in 2020. Paige-She is not from Atlanta
My post was mostly in jest. I enjoy stirring the pot.

Raven deserved it this year. Indeed, if I go full bore ‘Cock fan, Azzi should not have been a finalist with only a 2 game resume.. Her spot should have been taken by Rivers.

Rivers averaged 37 ppg this year and that average went to 42.3 in the playoffs, she even scored 50 points back to back and then 47 and 43 haha. Freak of nature on the court she’s giving teams the work next year you can bet that!

Rivers wasn't even a finalist, although her recent numbers sure gave her support. It was the other Sania - Sania Feagin - who was a finalist with Johnson, Fudd, Aaliyah Moore, and Jersey Wolfenbarger. Rivers made the 2nd Team, and Hall was an honorable mention....

That was my point. Azzi should not have been a finalist for an award that is supposed to be for a season. She had no season. Not saying she won’t be the best frost next year. It’s just that she had no season playing in only two games. Rivers had a season and it was great.

I imagine the voters would have had qualms about choosing 3 Gamecocks as finalists though. So I guess rivers might not have been chosen anyway.

Hey if it gives Rivers personal impetus to prove herself during her college years, then that's fine by me.....

THE ATLANTA TIP OFF CLUB ADMINISTERS THE NAISMITH AWARDS AND ANNUALLY HONORS THE TOP NATIONAL PLAYERS, COACHES, OFFICIALS, AND ADMINISTRATORS FOR BASKETBALL EXCELLENCE. WINNERS ARE DETERMINED THROUGH SEPARATE VOTING ACADEMIES. PLAYER OF THE YEAR WINNERS ARE RECOGNIZED DURING THE NCAA FINAL FOUR, WHILE COACHES ARE HONORED AT THE NCAA FINAL FOUR OR ON THEIR COLLEGE CAMPUSES.

The Atlanta Tipoff Club did not have to go far to announce the winner of the 2021 Jersey Mike's Naismith High School Trophy.

Atlanta product Raven Johnson is the winner of the award which honors the top high school player in the country. She has led her Westlake team to a No. 10 national ranking and a spot in this weekend's Georgia State Championship game, looking for a fourth-straight title.

ATLANTA (March 11, 2021) – Last night, the Atlanta Tipoff Club awarded the 2021 Jersey Mike’s Naismith High School Trophy for Boys Player of the Year to Chet Holmgren, a senior at Minnehaha Academy in Minneapolis. Today, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced senior Raven Johnson of Westlake High School in Atlanta as the 2021 Jersey Mike’s Naismith High School Trophy Girls Player of the Year. Johnson will be honored later this year with a ceremony at her high school.

I apologize to all my fellow Gamecock fans who took umbrage to my joke that implied a bias toward Raven because the Naismith Award is handled by an Atlanta Organization - (the latter statement of which is true.) I should have used blue font and a winky emoticon. My joke was made in the spirit of banner umbrage, Wilson balls, and Boston's interview that pervades this board.

Raven's award was well earned despite the location of where the award is administered. In addition to her great year in high school, she had an excellent year on the AAU circuit. I truly feel that she is going to prove herself to be one of the best point guards in the game under Dawn's leadership. I am extremely excited in anticipation of her donning the garnet and black and expect her to make a meaningful contribution to the team as a freshman.

I will follow the party line henceforth.
