Unbelievable that this is by far South Carolina's toughest road game in the conference. Against an NCAA bubble team.

This is such a trap game; best player injured, in between two big home games, far from home and a streaky three point shooting team. Gamecocks in a close one.

Ah I stand corrected then. Kentucky, also overrated, but not a bubble team :) assuming Howard comes back timely

It's a couple weeks down the road, but if Howard is still out Kentucky isn't much.
Her return has been described as "mid-February," which I presume would be in time for Feb. 23.

Old news.

The schedule advantage was the primary reason Carolina fans thought we were probably the clear favorites in the league.

I don't think any of us anticipated being #1 in the country at that point in time.

Ahead of another big SEC contest on Thursday, one member of that starting lineup will be a “game time” decision for Staley — freshman forward Aliyah Boston.

Against Tennessee this past Sunday, Boston appeared to plant her foot awkwardly while going for a rebound and immediately left the game, limping back to the locker room. She reappeared on the bench in the fourth quarter and Staley said afterward she could have returned if it was the national championship.

Before USC left to play No. 25 Arkansas on the road Thursday, Staley provided a limited update.

“She’s doing OK. A little less pain, which is good. We’ll see how it goes tomorrow,” Staley said, adding that it was an ankle/foot ailment.

Wednesday’s practice session ended before the media were able to view any drills, but Boston was dressed to practice.

What is Boston's injury?

landed on her foot awkwardly during our last game. Limped to the locker room. Doesn't seem serious but at the time it looked scary, she didn't come back in the game but was seen on the bench with nothing on her leg.

Yep, I for one was concerned with all the youth taking major roles during the non-conference schedule: like last season, we started out 4-4 then went 19-6 the rest of the way, including 13-3 in SEC play which was good for a tie in 2nd place. And that team didn't have close to the cohesiveness this season's team has, nor as strong a defensive/rebounding presence throughout the roster.

Last season despite the 2nd place in conference finish, we needed a strong SECT to try to move up in the NCAAT seeding, but fell in our 1st game to - believe it or not - Arkansas. That anchored us to a #4 Seed, in eventual champion Baylor's regional, but wherever we'd be, we'd be facing a #1 Seed, who rarely fails to reach the Final Four much less the Elite Eight. And we weren't good enough last season to upset a #1 Seed.

This season though we had some more newcomers in big roles replacing the newcomers in big roles last season, due to graduations and transfers out. I did like the way our SEC schedule set up for us, and hoped we gel quicker this non-SEC slate faster than we did last season, and also perform better in the SECT (which still is yet to be seen), and get up to at least a #2 Seed. So my expectations were the Sweet Sixteen again this season, with possibly an Elite Eight. I just didn't have any idea how the freshmen would respond. But we've done much better than I was allowing myself to hope for....

I was really concerned watching the replay of when she came up hobbled: it was definitely a non-contact injury, but she was positioning in a defensive position in the paint, and took a big step backwards with her left leg, then came up hurt. It was the type of long, lunging back-step that stretches the Achilles tendon and could cause damage there. That's as serious as any ACL injury, but when Aliyah returned to the bench and was smiling and laughing with her teammates, like nothing was wrong at all, I sighed a big sigh.

Boston flew with her teammates to Fayetteville. Coach Staley stated that her foot/ankle was still a "little sore", and that Boston would be a game-time decision. She made this statement yesterday, so we'll see. Arkansas has decent rebounding numbers for the season, but they are not that great a rebounding team. They are more of an offensive team as opposed to a defensive team. Boston pulled down a career-high 25 rebounds in our game in Columbia against them earlier this season, but the team overall dominated the boards 63-33. Beal had 12 of her own.

Arkansas is right at averaging 40 rpg, which is otherwise decent, but their non-conference schedule wasn't the toughest, and they are being out-rebounded on average by SEC competition thus far....

Aliyah in shoot around today with just a black sleeve or sock over left ankle/calf area. I say she plays, though possibly at less minutes than usual.

Arkansas is still in the locker room. They better be glad SC is missing a bunch. My prediction is looking bad already.
