The Staggering Rise in Assistant Football Coaches Salaries
In 2009, there were 5 assistant coaches in FBS Football making at least $600,000. This year, there are 37.
In 2009, there were 26 coaches making at least $400,000. This year, there are 117.
The highest paid assistant coach this season, based on total pay, is Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster at nearly $1.37 million. Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart has the highest recurring annual compensation at $1.35 million per year, just ahead of LSU offensive coordinator Cam Cameron, LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis and Clemson offensive coordinator (now SMU head coach) Chad Morris at $1.3 million. Cameron's contract calls for his pay to increase to $1.5 million in 2015. LSU's total Assistant Coaches Salary pool is a record $5M+. Bill Cubit was fired as the Western Michigan HC at $377,000 and grabbed an assistant role at Illinois paying $500,000!
It's no revelation that our lack of big money from the AAC payouts (and a dearth of deep pocketed donors hell bent on our football success) will present serious challenges for us in the arms race.
