So now that the Big East portion of the schedule is done, I took at closer look at our 10 losses because I wanted to see how big of a role free throw disparity played. The numbers are pretty eye popping. In over half of our losses our opponents took 10+ free throws more than we attempted. Initially I was thinking that maybe we just shoot a lot more 3's and it leads to action in the paint vs. our opponents, so then I went back and looked at points in the paint. It tells a pretty interesting story. In only 4 of our losses were we outscored in the paint (2 of them were to St. John's) and we were never outscored in the paint by more than 4 points. Six out of these ten games have what I would consider to be statistically significant outliers which to me says these games likely were not fairly officiated. I do agree that our defense in Maui was not good, but we basically got punched in the face with a -16 FT differential in our first game there and I believe set a standard of "trying not to foul" vs. "playing defense" which other teams were clearly allowed to do to us. Probably grasping at straws here, but my point is how many of these games would we have lost if the free throw disparity wouldn't have been SO one-sided? This is my 40th year following UConn bball and I've never seen anything like this season in my life. Not trying to make this a thread about complaining about officiating as some of this is our bad defense, but I thought the numbers were eye-popping. Actually very few teams outscored us in the paint all season.
