first of all, i'm hoping the formatting holds ... (otherwise, i apologize)

any thoughts on what, if anything, we should interpret from this?

I have some thoughts but wanted to see what you guys think...

Stat This year .. Last year... '14 champs.. '11 champs .. '04 champs.. 2009
PPG 79... 64 ... 72 ... 72... 79... 78...
RPG 37... 34... 35... 40... 45... 43...
APG 14... 12... 12... 13... 17... 16...

FG% ... 48.6% .. 43.9%... 44.9%.. 43.4%... 48% .. 47.4%
FT%... 75%.. 70.7% .. 77.7%.. 76.3%.. 62.3%.. 67.8%
3P% ... 38.1%.. 35.5%.. 38.7%.. 32.9% .. 40.2%.. 34.1%

All of the percentages seem to be in line. I imagine a lot of that is influenced by competition, though.

it's the defensive end, the energy/focus, and at times stagnant offense

It's really hard to compare years in terms of team statistics. The game of college basketball has changed even in just the last couple years. Scoring is up because of the 30 second shot clock, and you can barely touch/bump guys on defense w/o being called for a foul. Never-mind the varying play styles and different competition each team faced...

I agree here. You should do the same thing with defensive efficiency numbers to get a better view of the overall team. The stats look decent on the offensive end, but most of our losses have come from either defensive issues or intangible issues (how we lost the cuse game, etc.).

In prior years I knew what to expect/what we were going to get, and added a dose of optimism. This year, we arguably have more talent on paper, but I feel clueless what it will look like on the court every game. If we ever find an identity and true alpha pg (purvis is trying, but more from the 2), we'll be scary. Until then, I'll go into each game unsure.

interesting to see how they line up, but I wouldn't put too much thought in it. like rayisthegoat said, offense is up pretty much across the boards in the ncaa. also we just started divisional play, and have been beating up pretty bad teams, when the numbers for 14, 11, 04, 99, would account for a whole season of play and formidable opponents.

The per game numbers need to be adjusted for pace or changed to per possession stats to have any ability to compare.

Need some defensive efficiency numbers before we can draw conclusions... until then, we're only seeing half the story. Also, offensive stats are skewed with new rules and 30 sec shot clock, so we're not really able to draw any conclusions from the numbers posted.

Rebounding, defensive FG %, offensive FG %, and ast/turnover ratio are most telling stats in basketball and comparing them year-to-year don't mean much... have to compare it to other teams this year.

I remember Emeka being awful at the line but was he really that bad? That last one mattered, a lot, so no complaints there.
