There are always knee-jerk reactions to things that just happened, and there is sometimes false nostalgia as well. Ideally, we meet somewhere in the middle in terms of how we approach this discussion and decide.
Some would say 2002 was the best ever. Others make an argument for 2014. What about the team we just witnessed? They're certainly comparable:
Some would say 2002 was the best ever. Others make an argument for 2014. What about the team we just witnessed? They're certainly comparable:
- Total victories: 38 for 2016, 39 for 2002, 40 for 2014
- Lowest single-game MOV: nine for 2002, 10 for 2016, 11 for 2014
- Season-wide MOV: almost identical for 2002 and 2014 (between 35 and 36 points), just about 40 for 2016
- WNBA draft picks: Immediately after the 2002 season, four of the top six picks were in that 2002 UConn team, with DT being a #1 pick in 2004 as well. In 2014, the core rotation of six players either have been or will be drafted in the first round, 2016's team has overlap with 2014, but there's a likelihood the WNBA draft will feature the top two picks from Uconn's 2016 squad, and possibly the top three.
