New coach is Texas associate Coach Travis Mays - sounds promising.

He apparently has a lot of recruiting connections in Texas, which has a lot of
H.S. talent.

Should be able to elevate SMU from "terrible" to "not bad".

Travis was a very good player at Texas and a first round NBA draft pick in the early 90's. I didn't realize he was coaching.

He was an assistant coach under Jody Conradt at Texas, under Van Chancellor at LSU, under Andy Landers at Georgia, and then back at Texas again when Karen Aston was hired.

I think this is a great hire! We need these teams in The American to improve and I think this is a major step forward for SMU.

I could not agree more. Some of those teams need to get on the fast track to improvement, and becoming competitive. I realize there's no overnight fix.

Some of the teams in the AAC as Charles Barkley would say are "turrabul".

Carlton: Call from UConn's Auriemma helps SMU decide on Travis Mays as new women's coach | SportsDay

>>Mays has worked for three Hall of Fame coaches: Texas’ Jody Conradt, LSU’s Van Chancellor and Georgia’s Andy Landers. During his time at Georgia in the 2011-12 season, he spent two days visiting Connecticut coach Geno Auriemma.

“He told me you have to stay true to who you are and that’s how you have to recruit,” Mays said.

Auriemma, who won his 11th NCAA title earlier this week, called Hart during the search. Hart even joked that it’s the first hire he’s made where he’s told the new coach he wants him to finish second in the conference, a nod to UConn’s dominance.

“I imagine a lot of people want [Auriemma] to recommend them for jobs,” Hart said. “He didn’t call me about three names or five names or seven names. He called me about Travis. ... It re-enforced where we were headed at that point.”<<
