Looked up at the TV in the bar across the street to see a replay of Ray Allen's record breaking 3.

Thanks! I'm just going through this time on my way to Dhaka - I was also here a couple of weeks ago when i passed through on my way up to chiang mai for Christmas with my aunt and second cousin who live up there. My brother lived in Bangkok for 6 years and another cousin has been in Bangkok for the past 10 years. Would be funny if knew one or both...but it's a long shot i guess - there's a pretty big expat population here.

I didn't get admitted to any of the colleges I wanted to go to, so instead of settling for community college or even worse - UMass (one of the few places that accepted me) I decided to go to university in Bangkok! Greatest experience of my life - both in the class room and outside of it (wink, wink)

You went to university in Bangkok and you graduated?? That's more impressive than any ivy league degree.

Who said anything about graduated?

Funny enough, a few years later I was hired by a firm out in Arizona. That place was a bigger culture shock for me than Thailand.

One Night in Bangkok Lyrics
[THE AMERICAN]
Bangkok, Oriental setting
And the city don't know that the city is getting
The creme de la creme of the chess world in a
Show with everything but Yul Brynner

Time flies -- doesn't seem a minute
Since the Tirolean spa had the chess boys in it
All change -- don't you know that when you
Play at this level there's no ordinary venue

It's Iceland -- or the Philippines -- or Hastings -- or --
or this place!

[COMPANY]
One night in Bangkok and the world's your oyster
The bars are temples but the pearls ain't free
You'll find a god in every golden cloister
And if you're lucky then the god's a she
I can feel an angel sliding up to me

[THE AMERICAN]
One town's very like another
When your head's down over your pieces, brother

[COMPANY]
It's a drag, it's a bore, it's really such a pity
To be looking at the board, not looking at the city

[THE AMERICAN]
Whaddya mean? Ya seen one crowded, polluted, stinking town --

[COMPANY]
Tea, girls, warm, sweet
Some are set up in the Somerset Maugham suite

[THE AMERICAN]
Get Thai'd! You're talking to a tourist
Whose every move's among the purest
I get my kicks above the waistline, sunshine

[COMPANY]
One night in Bangkok makes a hard man humble
Not much between despair and ecstasy
One night in Bangkok and the tough guys tumble
Can't be too careful with your company
I can feel the devil walking next to me

[THE AMERICAN]
Siam's gonna be the witness
To the ultimate test of cerebral fitness
This grips me more than would a
Muddy old river or reclining Buddha

And thank God I'm only watching the game -- controlling it --

I don't see you guys rating
The kind of mate I'm contemplating
I'd let you watch, I would invite you
But the queens we use would not excite you

So you better go back to your bars, your temples, your massage
parlours --

[COMPANY]
One night in Bangkok and the world's your oyster
The bars are temples but the pearls ain't free
You'll find a god in every golden cloister
A little flesh, a little history
I can feel an angel sliding up to me

One night in Bangkok makes a hard man humble
Not much between despair and ecstasy
One night in Bangkok and the tough guys tumble
Can't be too careful with your company
I can feel the devil walking next to me

Yes - I'm on a bit of a tour now. I went to Thailand for Christmas then to Burma for 11 days. Today I'm off to Nepal for a week then to India for 2 weeks then Sri Lanka for 1 week. After that I'll spend 3 days in Kuala Lumpur and 2 days in Brunei before returning to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam which is where I live these days. :)

My biggest culture shock thus far was when I was chatting with an older American guy - he said Obama was a muslim communist. :) I chose to refrain from engaging with him. (please don't let that comment turn this into a political discussion.)

Now I have that song stuck in my head - thanks alot!
(At least it's better than the stupid Lady Gaga song it kicked out of my head.)

You need to be more specific. Which stupid Lady Gaga song? I'm guessing it's the one where she goes country?

Sorry but if I try to remember I risk it getting stuck in my head again.

Cool! I'm in Kathmandu now - making plans to see what I can in the short time I have here. In India I'll go to new Delhi/Agra/Jaipur before flying to Varanasi then to Mumbai and goa then I'll head to the southern tip and take a ferry to Sri Lanka.

Hahaha - I've been there several times and had just been there 1 days before so I used it as downtime. That said, I just arrived in Pokhar, Nepal and my first order of business is checking email, Facebook and the BY. :)

Was stationed in Korat , Thailand for a while during the Viet Nam war . Used to ferry special prisoners of war from Saigon to Bangkok. I don't think there is another place like that in the world. To this day tell stories about my time in Bangkok and my friends are riveted to there seats with some of my stories , some find them hard to believe but they do know they are real. Spend some time in Pataya beach down by the coast by the gulf of Siam which caters to Americans and man I'm telling the gunsha was freaking unbelivable . Actually brought some back by mistake and of course this was back in the day.

I'd love to hear some of your stories too! I can only imagine theworld that you were living in at that time.

I spent a lot of time on the island of Ko Chang between my years teaching in Japan and Korea (not during the occupations!!).

On the way to Ko Chang, I stopped by Pattaya. It was sorta eye-popping and not in a good way. Dirty old men with very youngs girls galore- I was going to stay but was pretty shaken up by the whole thing so I left after one night.
