Should G-League players be recruited?

Heck no. Same with guys that have played professionally overseas
I wasn't and still not a fan of the transfer portal but that's happening and looks like it's not going to change, though we have benefitted from it. Now with G-League recruiting seems like that is going that way too. But, I agree with the BYU coach if that will be the new normal.

I can only speak for myself. But I think it sucks. I think the euro thing sucks too. I like the rings we got off the portal to be sure, but i used to watch and follow every top program. That is impossible now. Look at IU. Not one single returning staffer or player. The overall product is way worse for me.

Well said. It's going to be hard to have program fan loyalty going forward. All Div 1 players accepting money can now be held to a professional level. The blur between that line has long passed. At the college level we now have another level of pro sports? It might not all be bad, surely for the players, that can command money, being paid for their talent is the American way.

The downside is the slide of the lower Div 1 programs to Div 2 and 3 ala the University of Hartford. They unwittingly left money on the table with the NCAA settlement but are, perhaps, a return to the original model for college sports.

College basketball is really a landing place for young kids and students coming out of high school.

To bring in seasoned professionals makes no sense. They are taking a spot away from the younger generations.

And it's not even appealing as a fan to see a guy from the G-League join a team.

I call this the Yngwie Malmsteen phenomenon. I've known guitarheads who swear by him and say he's the master, but although his music leaves me cold, he's not even in the same league of technical mastery as come classical guitar guys. Heck, Hee Haw's Roy Clark blows him out of the water.

My point: this isn't pro ball. An older G-League guy may supercharge your team but essentially you're importing a pro into an inferior level of basketball. What if one of these guys blows up and dominates? You'll see a grown man 25 year old obliterating a skinny 18 year old.

Is there anywhere that you as a fan would draw the line?

I defected as a Dodger fan when they became the $$$ team they are today (I still love baseball)

I know all this stuff is legal. But similarly it's legal to be a jerk and also legal to disown said jerk.
When they recruit g-league guys I’m out. College basketball will be dumb enough to become the de facto G-League and pay too much to get there. Colleges will pay hundreds of thousands for guys who are willing to play for $45 grand (standard gleague salary this year).

I want Hurley to use every available avenue and resource to compete for national championships.
This. If the NCAA isn’t shutting it down, don’t fall behind. This feels similar to how some people were slow to the realities of NIL, do what it takes to win.

I think the line should be drawn at the G League, since it’s basically the NBA junior division and the comp these guys are playing are borderline NBA players. Some random division 2 euro league club isn’t actually comparable to me. Maybe don’t allow guys off the top leagues as well?

The current college players are pros. I don't see the objection to other pros (from the G-League or Europe) entering the NCAA pro league.

The G-League kids (that didn't enter the draft) deserve the eligibility because they chose the money over playing as an amateur in the NCAA. Now that there is no distinction I don't see the harm in giving them a second chance. Plus, this class is going away now that the NCAA pro league pays more than the G-League.

The Euro thing is tough because they don’t really have amateurism there. There aren’t AAU and high school teams, you just play for professional clubs from the time you’re a kid. If a 16, 17, 18 year old kid gets a shot playing for the senior team on a top league team and wants to come to the U.S. to play college ball do you turn him away?

College athletics should be for AMATEURS. Doesn't seem that complicated. If you've gotten paid by a professional team to play that sport, you should be ineligible. I could see exceptions for de minimis payments or members of under-18 teams. But in general, if you're 20 years old and you've been getting paid by a professional Euro team or a G-League team, that should be it.

P.S. If it's allowed, Hurley should pursue every good player. Just like the current portal situation is ridiculous but that shouldn't stop the staff for exploiting it.

I didn't see this when I posted but I agree it may be unfair to a kid who played ball for a Euro junior team. But there can be a rule for that.

He can. I’m just saying I won’t bother following them any more. Hope he succeeds snd all that but it will be like major league soccer to me. I have no idea who plays and really don’t care.

Trouble is now that Pandora’s box has opened with athletes getting paid - it would potentially be tough to legally deny someone the opportunity to earn income. Hard to know how far down the slope we will go. There’s currently a restriction of being within 5 years of your high school graduating class, but that could even be viewed as age discrimination in court.

I think we could go back. In the music business it went back. Musicians were royalty. Always got paid, then in the early 20s mostly played for free, then from 50s-00s raked it in, now back to playing for free.
Most college athletes would still play if they eliminated all but name image likeness. Btw, stop calling it NIL. That lasted for like 2 weeks.

I think once you play for the top clubs/leagues in Europe it’s all the same. Those lower division “pro” leagues may as well be labeled something else.

If he imports an entire G-League team and several top Euro pros, he can win the next 10 in a row.

As long as no one else does it. Heck, the state of Connecticut should just buy the Maine Lobster Claws and call them UConn.

I don't watch the G-League, not do I watch Benetton Treviso, but if they put on UConn jerseys.... I still wouldn't watch.
