At many big time schools the “student” part of the student-athlete experience has been subjugated to a year round focus on football or basketball. At P-5 schools in particular, football & basketball generate over $15 billion in direct revenue from ticket sales, broadcast revenue & merchandise sales, and that’s before including substantial support from alumni contributions to schools that finance everything from athletic scholarships and coach’s salaries to upgraded facilities. The massive business of college sports is built on the foundation of the athletes themselves and the one sided bargain which favors the institutions that make millions off of their labor.
