I saw something happen at a game I've never seen before. I'm sure it has happened, but it was my first time seeing it.
At the Hartford-UMBC game, Jen called a timeout to set up an inbounds play. Player 1 is out of bounds, player 2 is inbounds, then go out of bounds. Player1 passes to player 2, player 1 jumps in bounds and players 2 inbounds the ball to her, and player 1 now has the ball unguarded because they weren't guarding the inbounder. (bear with me, this isn't yet the interesting part, this happens often). The ref thinks something was amiss and blows the whistle. The refs confer, realize it was a legal play and wave the equivalent of "my bad" and motion to start the inbounds play over again. Jen is incensed, because the play worked to perfection, but she can't have them do it again, as it won't be a surprise. So she yells at the refs, "Do I get a free time-out?" in a tone of voice that sounds like she feels she deserves one, but isn't expecting it. The refs confer, and give her a free timeout.
I thought it was a perfect example of refs using their discretion to do something not specifically covered in the rulebook (AFAIK), but fair in the context of the events.
Has anyone else seen a ref award a free timeout to a coach?
