He could act with his eyes. Wonderful, deep voice and handsome, but he had great eyes.
And an avid and pretty fair golfer, too.
He grew up poor in Edinburgh - his mother cleaned houses and his father worked in a factory. He tried several things as a young man, including competing in the 1953 Mr. Universe contest, but he found his niche in acting.
