So, my birding trips have brought me in to contact with several scuba divers, most recently a 20 year vet of the nyc police dept. So, I've decided that my summer project is NOT to clean out my closets but learn to scuba. And, then I realized, I'll be in St Thomas in November. How perfect!

Anyone have any insight to the logistics thereof?

I had my first SCUBA lesson in Frenchman Bay, just southeast of Charlotte-Amalie in 1993. It was a business that catered mostly to the cruise lines... young (certified) American instructors... Don't remember much of the area except the water was warm and crystal clear... a great first experience. They had me 30 feet under with a tank on my back feeding fish in less than an hour.
