Like MaconDawg, I don’t know whether “personal reasons” is a euphemism for a health issue for a member of the Lakatos family, a euphemism for a potentially embarrassing situation for the University, or a diplomatic way of saying this particular position coach wasn’t getting the job done on the field. For everyone’s sake, I hope it’s the third option, and, as long as it’s not the second option, I wish Scott Lakatos well.
Whatever the cause was, though, this clearly was the most needed change among several needed changes. For all the griping about Mike Bobo, the offense continued generally to perform well, despite losing every skill position starter, and several key backups, to injury for at least one game; Georgia’s point production was not inflated by the Bulldogs’ performance against the weak sisters on the schedule (of which there were only two, by the way), because Georgia scored in the forties in the Red and Black’s three biggest wins (over South Carolina,LSU, and North Texas). For all the griping about our strength and conditioning program, the Bulldogs played eleven ballgames that were tight at least as late as the third quarter, won six of them, and didn’t lose any of them due to wilting in the final 15 minutes. For all the (deserved) griping about Will Friend, the offensive line at least appeared competent from time to time.
The secondary, though, was uniformly awful, and it did not improve as the season progressed. Georgia finished ninth in the league against the pass, snagged the league’s second-fewest interceptions, and surrendered touchdown receptions of 48 yards (against LSU), 73 yards (against Auburn), 77 yards (against Clemson), and 99 yards (against Nebraska).
No member of the Georgia coaching staff needed to be gone more than Scott Lakatos; no position group was in need of greater improvement than the secondary. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link, and what unmistakably and undeniably was our weakest link in 2013 is about to get a whole lot stronger. We all wanted change, and this clearly was the proper place to start. Though the reasons may (or may not) be bad, this is a positive development for the Georgia program.
