I don’t like any of the traditional Irish whiskies but I love pure pot stills, which are like the single malts of Irish whiskey. Green Spot, Powers or Redbreast.

Outside of gin, Green Spot is my favorite spirit. Even more than the Red Breast 12 or 15.

Redbreast 12
Aberlour 16

The 16....hmm.

Not for fishy's inquiry in the OP, and it's certainly not whiskey, but thinking of Irish whiskey reminded me of this new find for me last year. I've never really been an Irish cream liqueur (e.g., Bailey's) guy, but my mother in law got this for me for Christmas and I almost nailed it in one sitting:

Just thought of another option that's neither Scotch nor Irish nor bourbon, if it's available: Westlake American Oak. I had this at The Whisky Bar in Seattle three years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Pricey though.

I also like it better than Red Breast. I've never ponied up for Yellow Spot but I have tried it and I actually like Green Spot better. Powers John Lane 12 year is also excellent.

This thread will live for 90 minutes and then be locked.

Going to the liquor store in 90 minutes.

Tell me which bottle of Scotch or Irish Whiskey to buy. I don’t want to play 20 questions about what my preferences are, so don’t ask any.

Final rec, seeing as you like the Lagavulin 16; this is my fallback when I can't get that (or if they're charging more than I'm willing to pay for it):

In true BY fashion, I recommend this:

It is neither scotch nor Irish whiskey, and generally not available in the US, so it seems like a typical suggestion.
My brother just got me a bottle for my birthday. It was the 2nd N on the top. All gone now.

If you haven't tried Monkey Shoulder, you should. It's a good value, quality blended malt Scotch. Otherwise, if you don't have Oban, it's a nice mellow drinker. Or if you like peat, but want to venture outside the usual contenders (Ardbeg, Lagavulin etc.), Laphroaig Triple Wood is one of my favs.

For bourbon, Angel's Envy and Maker's Mark 46 are quite smooth and tasty.

One more. In Scotland a while back a local told me that Glendronach was outstanding. He was right.

Well the thread is past it's expiration date, so all that's left now is the big reveal. What did you go with?
