In the master plan being bid for the Athletic District Development which will start construction in Spring of 2018 there will be an expansion to the Schenkman Training Center. Total price of project will be $90 Millon and is moving forward. BIG news for UConn Athletics!!!!

A request for Statement of Qualifications has been posted by the University for development of the Athletic District. Development to start Spring of 2018 with a budget up to $90,000,000.00.

supporting facilities are in poor condition compared to other flagship universities in the American Athletic Conference and elsewhere,

many thanks to @UCONNJACK for posting this!!!

Can we expect the Freitas expansion to including (at least) doubling the seating capacity?

It has to meet HE rules regarding capacity which is at least 4500. I would say they build it to 4500 with the possibility of expanding it to 5000-5500 down the road.
As far as Schenkman Expansion..I would LOVE to see the practice field moved down along side the facility from the top of the hill...that would leave a GREAT spot for a Lacrosse facility

FD, I'm very curious about the intent of Schenkman expansion. Is it to allow other sports (men's & women's soccer? Field Hockey? Lacrosse?) to also have an indoor facility?

I'm optimistic that the timing of the $90mm improvements is because they know something (good mews) is imminent.

Yes, it would seem odd to release a capital expenditure of $25m-$90m on athletic field expansions if UConn were staying in a diluted AAC (Assuming teams other than UConn get invites).

I found that interesting as well.....Sq footage wise (especially the strength training facilities), I wonder where Schenkman fits among other facilities?

I've been there a few times. It is easily sufficient (comparable to many of the better NFL facilities) for football. Logically expansion would be for the benefit of other sports.

I wonder if Balis is trying to make a centralized S&C facility.

I don't know much about the Schenkman expansion. However, I do know that various UConn sports teams such as baseball and soccer already use Schenkman some for indoor training. In the case of soccer, they have played indoor exhibitions during their preseason that are closed to the public at Schenkman when the weather outside is threatening. I don't know if this use by other sports would increase with these improvements to Schenkman.

He's got to get men's basketball S&C under supervision - using more standardized approaches.
I agree with you on this...but they also have a dedicated room at the Werth Champions Center for S&C. IMHO basketball and ice hockey need upgrades at the S&C position.
