Yes he is.

Give us 10 more things that jumped out at you, those of us who couldn't make it need a fix.

Didn't get all that much in terms of personnel but a few things:

Saw Friend on the sidelines without pads. Talked to Coach Perkins a bit after practice and said he was fine.

Felt bad for McCummings laying on the table.

Dhameer Bradley showed me a little something in the 7 on 7's. Got hit hard by Obi trying to catch a ball across the middle. Got up, hurried to the line, caught a ball underneath as the safety valve and put a move on one of the LB's that drew a big response from the players. Kid showed a little moxie.

  • Matt Walsh is a big get. Think he scored 4-5 TDs in Red Zone drills and held his own in the 1:1 LB blocking drills (except for one time when Marquise Vann got leverage and tossed him). Can't see him donning a red shirt.
  • Seems to me - we've had a significant upgrade in size
  • Dairy Bar is always a good way to end day :p

Thanks for the reports guys! Wish I could have made it today but it looks like it was a good turnout.

I'm no football expert but I'll give it a shot.
Agree, Obi made a couple of really great stretched out pass deflections.
All the QB's threw some great balls and a few bad. Thought Casey looked like the clear #2, very confident. In terms of QB snaps it was 1. Chandler 2. Casey 3. Boyle. 4. Kivon 5. Lagow. Wish I could have seen more Lagow, I'm pulling for the kid from Texas...his family was there.
Hippo had some good powerful runs which drew coach's praise, but dropped a perfect pass with no defenders nearby.
Lyle ran well and holes opened up for him --for which he and the O celebrated.
Josh Mariner passes the eye test --compact, muscular, fast, pushes the pile.
Matt Walsh looked good, I think he had some catches out of the FB position. Looked great in the red zone sets getting into the end zone.
Sean M. was making plays until he went down.
Lemelle had a few good catches. He's going to be good.

Sorry for lack of detail. I brought a printed out roster and these were the kids I kept looking up after something good.

Another picture of the Great Dane. There was a noticeable difference in sound when he slapped the pads versus a few others.

Hughes is all over these guys during the drill. Very impressive.

Hank Hughes yelling over and over "Stay on your feet, stay on your feet"
Thought TJW was exceptional with his energy --vocal all over the field and even throwing a few F-bombs.

Excellent news, especially on Casey being a clear #2, but I'm wondering what's up with Lagow getting so few snaps? I don't want to read too much into it. Maybe it's a result of what the coaches saw or didn't see in Thursday's scrimmage?

In his practice interview HCPP said you can't take anything away from the pecking order based on practice. "They're just looking at various things". I thought Lagow looked very good, threw at least one great deep ball I can remember.

My thoughts .. take it for what its worth:

- Missed the special teams warm ups so not much to talk about there.

- Boyle looks like he has the most upside of all the QB's I saw today. Over all he looks in command and throws a really nice ball .. made a great play in the redzone while under pressure throwing the ball up over the D to the outside right shoulder of his receiver who was well defended in the corner of the end zone. He def had some freshmen moments, as is to be expected... one play that stands out is during 7 v 7 where he forced a throw into double coverage and got picked. But the kid can throw. They may just be warm ups but he is a flat out athlete, you don't have to be a professional to spot that. He looks like the #2 at this point. As far as snaps I'd say Whitmer, Boyle/Cochran were pretty even on reps .. followed by Taylor then Lagow. Lagow throws a nice ball but if I had to put my money on it he's going to redshirt. He has a lot of upside too. I think Taylor is a multi threat (though they didnt run him) has a chance to see the field some this year.

- Whitmer played like Whitmer, I don't know .. He has the most game time experience but I see more upside in Boyle... I'll leave it at that. Earlier on I saw a drill dedicated to QB's shifting/scrambling around while other QB's pressured.. some were movements in the pocket others roll outs. I hope thats a standard drill for QB's and not a sign of things to come... speaking of which..

- Oline ... this area really worries me, I mean REALLY worries me. Maybe I'm just over reacting and don't have a clue. Yes the defense is usually well ahead of the offense early on... but theres a week and a half left until the season opener and I didn't see much to be excited about. Lots of coaching on where players should be lined up... I heard Deleone yelling for players to get down into their stance, the line got NO push on the majority of the running plays and the QB didn't have much time to get the ball off. There were a number of running plays where the RB was running for his life in the back field. During the hurry up no huddle the DLine did seem to be off balance which worked to the advantage of the offense.. hope we see alot of that type of play this year.

- "STAY ON YOUR FEET!" ...."QUIT FALLING DOWN!" I heard a lot of that being screamed today. I believe it was Hughes who was demanding the Dline stay upright. Pasqualoni was very vocal too. No need to get injuries before the season starts.

- Running game ... yea... lots of defenders in the back field (see Oline comments above). Mccombs ... still goes down after first contact. The person that impressed me today was #25 Hypolite, he powered through on some plays and broke lose on others. Looks pretty damn good! Dropped an easy pass early on but in the scrimmage drills he held his own and made gains. Delorenzo did OK but again didnt get much help from the OLine.

- Defense ... #2 from Florida is BIG.. He had a red zone break up pass where he dove and knocked the ball down right before it hit the WR's hands .... he hits hard too. Our LB core is going to be a beast this year. Speaking of BEAST Obi Melifonwu stands out. Though a safety, at first glance, he looks like a LB IMO and is all over the field... Brian Urlacher anyone? He is going to be special. DLine handled the OLine today.... corners looked good .. mack hits hard as I'm sure you have all heard. Glad to hear McQuillan has been released from the hospital with nothing too serious.

- WR starters are obvious .. Davis, Phillips on the outside with fox/Bradley as the slot. Though I did see Bradley line up on the wide out few times. Abrams had a good catch and run on the 7v7's. I forget who it was and the actual play but there was pass where a WR's made an ankle breaking shift that caused a number of 'OOOOOooooo's!' from the side line.

- Over all its just practice and the coaches aren't going to show anything significant. Its just an opportunity for casual fan's like myself to act like they can evaluate things. The weather was great and its a great way to get fans engaged. No need to predict how this will unfold for the season... we will let the games speak for themselves.

Thanks for the info guys. As far as QB reps, there is an afternoon practice so I'm sure there is a plan to get everyone reps.

Besides TE concerns my other concern is depth at WR. If we are going to be no huddle, and at times hurry up, the WR's are gonna be gassed by the 4th quarter if they don't get a blow or two.

Hope someone develops quickly.

Remember, Cincy set up the pass with the run last year (they ran in the neighborhood of 100 times more than they passed) so if our TE situation is not good and we can't run......I'll stop now as I just made myself depressed. :(

Silver hit on the problem people usually ignore with tight ends. They badly need someone who can block. Boland wasn't even with the program 2 weeks ago and may start in two weeks.

Medic, as the saying goes "you can't teach size". That being said, do you see Knappe not only seeing the field but contributing in a big way?

I think he's raw and will only get better with each game. They are trying him at both end and tackle, that tells me they are trying to find a way to keep him/get him on the field because he can make an impact.

Kind of like with the O- line, it gets old going against teammates with familiar tendencies - they all need someone new to hit for anyone to get full impact of progress made.
