Santa Clara County issues tough, new COVID-19 rules including quarantines for some

Contact sports, including professional leagues, will be prohibited for at least three weeks, officials said Saturday

For Stanford athletics, according to a county official, this means "they will not be able to play games or have practices where they have direct contact.”

So they are looking for an alternate Bay Area football stadium, but nobody seems to be talking about how it affects returning from away games > 150 miles away. ??

There are a lot of venues within 150 miles of Santa Clara County.

Edit: oops, you were asking about away games. Stanford WBB happens to have a few home games scheduled in a row. After that the first away game is Dec 13 at Cal, which is less than 150 miles away. First games scheduled outside the radius are Dec19/21 at USC/UCLA. Then the next week at UofA/ASU before returning home. I don't know how the quarantine will affect what they decide to do...

If I understand the restrictions correctly, I don't see any solution other than Stanford temporarily relocating its entire team and staff to a makeshift camp bubble outside the county.

Either that or they just cancel all their games while those restrictions remain in effect.

Stanford is located right on the county line. For a while the football team practiced at a high school a few miles north in San Mateo County, when that county's restrictions were a bit lighter than Santa Clara county.

It's also a short hop across a bridge to the East Bay.

The team is living on campus now and not going home for the holidays. Classes are done for the quarter and final exams were cancelled for all students, so the players have nothing to do if they can't practice or play.

Stiil, whether the WBB team cancels or tries to keep playing in the next county over, I don't know, it could go either way.

All these restrictions are not legal unless written into law. Stanford should tell the county to stick it up their . If they are testing and masking and following all safety rules it is stupid to cancel their practice and games.

Stanford just posted an update to its website. For WBB:

"Stanford's four-game homestand, beginning with the Nov. 30 canceled contest against San Diego, will not be played at Maples Pavilion, and alternate dates and sites are being considered. In the meantime, the Cardinal plans to travel to Las Vegas, Nev., this week to play UNLV on Dec. 5. Additional scheduling updates will be provided as they become available."

Stanford Athletics has announced training and competition modifications for several programs, based on Santa Clara County Public Health Department's recent directive.

Interesting that the Stanford men's team was in North Carolina when the directive was announced, and so they've just stayed there to train and are looking to add nonconference games even as their initial Pac-12 home games have been canceled.

So do the Trees stay in Vegas? According to the county restrictions they would have to quarantine for 2 weeks if they return to Palo Alto. That means no practice. It would also create a problem if they travel over 75 miles for future road games.
