Going back to game against Florida, Sanogo is 3-7 on FT during last six games.

Oof.

If you ate going to play a traditional center whose offended is almost all near the rim, he has to get some contact and draw fouls.

161 minutes. 7 FTA.

Clingan is 3-5 in 73 minutes over same six games.

So, 6-12 combined from the five spot over six games and about 235 minutes.

Sanogo is either not getting the whistle or he has Jalen Adams-like contact avoidance.

I think it’s a mix.

both true, a mix. but i also think hitting a crazy high FG% like Sonogo will mean less "see if he makes it before blowing whistle" calls from some refs.

Unless he gets the ball real deep, he has been predictable...dribble, dribble, spin move, spin some more. The time it takes for all of that gets him surrounded. With all those hand flailing about you'd think that he would get a call now and then.

We've seen this in the past - Sanogo is not one of those players that has a knack for getting fouls. I suspect this is the result of several factors

1. He's strong - little bumps don't move his body or push him off balance, so refs don't call those. And his hands are super strong so when people slap his wrist it doesn't make him drop the ball, so they don't call/see it.
2. He's technical and quick to shoot... meaning if he gets a window he's going to get to his spot quickly and pop a shot off... no time for double teams to foul him on the rake and not a lot of time for a defender to get a cheapie
3. His go-to moves are not power moves... In other words despite his strength, he is not bulling guys down low to get a layup and creating contact - he's shooting a right hook or an up-and-under layup after several pumps/pivots. Again its a clean move not a lot of space for a foul.
4. When there is any push back he ends up shooting fade away hook shots, which will never, ever, ever be called fouls and rightly so. If he felt the contact and went up strait instead and got wacked - he'd have 2 shots every time. Bad fundamental he's picked up.

He fades a lot, but he also pump fakes like 3+ times to just get the defender in the wrong position. Then he hits a reverse layup without really any contact. If you’re watching the games he really doesn’t draw THAT much contact.

In addition to what everyone else has said, he also seals defenders off and then just gets an easy uncontested layup with little chance of drawing fouls (or if he draws them, it's on the seal or catch not the shot).

Part of it is also matchups. Nova, GTown, and Butler are in the top 50 of not fouling. They're coached not to foul or contest when they don't have a chance of blocking the shot. Castleton on Florida also has a really low foul rate for a center. Xavier is middle of the pack, but we've already discussed a bit how one sided the reffing was in that game.

So there you have it - our FT issues are definitely not all about shooting 3’s in one game. It is a season long issue with Big East/ACC refs.

He is getting fouled all the time. The refs let our opponents get away with murder. He needs to complain a little as well.

Yeah, his contact is designed to get the defender off balance so he can get a clean look. He doesn’t generally seek out contact on the actual shot attempt.

i think it's a mix of a lot of things mentioned in this thread -- he gets a lot of wide open looks off of fakes and spins, plus the refs don't give him a particularly good whistle -- but it's also worth pointing out that opponents have been flopping against him ALOT this year.

it happened at least twice in that xavier game, with no call from the refs. it should be a technical, which would then force them to play him straight-up the next time around. just another example of the bad whistle we got on saturday.

He uses a lot of fakes to bamboozle the opponent and leave himself a wide open layup without contact. I'd rather look at his overall efficiency than specifically whether he's drawing enough fouls.

Yeah, but they start hitting his arm when he gets ball, well before he shoots. He is being hacked constantly without it being called.

The guards need to get to the line. Adama is getting his regardless. Hawk, Newton and AJax need to be more assertive.

AK needs to be a threat too, we have too many guys who are purely 3pt shooters right now. Versatility and unpredictability is necessary.
