On January 20, 2003, UCONN played Notre Dame at Notre Dame. With 12 and 1/2 minutes left in the first half, Diana Taurasi picked up her third foul and sat on the bench. Notre Dame led 13-11 at that point. Since this was Taurasi's team and the other team members were just role players, UCONN fans were expecting the worst, especially with freshmen Barbara Turner, Ann Strother, and Wilnett Crocket on the floor with junior Maria Conlon at the point and sophomores Ashley Battle and Jessica Moore sharing the other position. The three freshmen combined for 45 points and 11 rebounds to carry UCONN to a 46-27 halftime lead and a 72-53 victory. Diana Taurasi had 4 points in the game. Geno said that this team was the best defensive team he had ever had.
I have often read how Diana Taurasi was only supported by role players in her last two seasons. Sometimes these role players, in particular, three freshmen can take over a game. Barbara Turner with her 25 points had a monster game.
