Robin Roberts: New health crisis

I'm so sorry to hear this news. I work on a hematology oncology floor and care for patients with MDS, including many who undergo transplants. It's a difficult procedure to undergo and I wish her well.

This really sucks. Having a related donor helps a great deal, but it's going to be a long road. She can beat it because she is relatively young and very healthy. I wish her well!

And blessings on her sister, the perfect match and willing donor.

Many prayers for Robin.

I should clarify, I meant the road is long due the side effects of more chemo and recovery from the bone marrow transplant (BMT), but her odds of beating MDS is extremely good because of her age, good health and having a sister who is a perfect match.

Of note, it is very easy to register to become a donor by having a kit mailed from Be the Match.org. The kit includes getting a cotton swab of DNA inside of your mouth/cheek . If you're initially a match for someone, they will contact you for another blood test. If you're still a match, the BMT procedure is like donating blood vs. the more painful procedure done before which included extracting bone marrow from pelvic bone.

Bawled my eyes out seeing this on GMA yesterday.. I absolutely love Robin, and after everything she's gone through this is the last thing she deserves. Though having her sister as a near perfect match, bone marrow transplants are always tricky (any kind of transplant is) because you never know if the body will attack it and reject it. I sincerely wish the best for her, she is my all time favorite wcbb commetator

Kait, you are correct. Nice years ago this month my older brother, who battled diabetes since childhood, passed away two years after receiving a kidney from my sister. Transplants are very risky for both the donor and the recipient and there is no guarantee that the body will accept the transplant.
