Regardless of the score and outcome Saturday it might be worth being at the stadium just to see what kind of operation Robert Chesney runs. He's at the right stage in his career for a nice jump up to the next thing if he has a good 2021. This is his 11th year as a HEAD Coach.

I doubt he'd go to UConn....Chesney is a pretty cagey (in a good way) guy....doubtful he takes a UConn job that is pretty much hamstrung where it's at in the FBS world today.

I could see him taking a DC position at a P5 school and go from there....hopefully not in the near future.

Around 300K I believe.....point being, he's a pretty astute dude on the college football landscape....I doubt he would leave HC to jump to UConn....he'll wait for a P5 school to come calling.

He may be cagey but the only P5's schools who would look at a career New England guy who has zero D1 coaching experience are BCU and the orange.

I could see Chesney's trajectory much like Joe Moorhead's at Fordham....leave Fordham to become OC at Penn St, later to become HC at Miss. St......something along those lines. I'm not saying he'd go from HC at HC to a P5 HC directly.

He's pretty astute? He's at freaking HC with zero FBS experience on his resume and he's already 44. ZERO FBS experience.

Morehead had EIGHT years of FBS experience between Akron and UConn when Penn St called. Plus he was a Pitt GA. That's all rather important when selecting a coordinator.

He's needs to kick some serious butt at HC the next two seasons to make that kind of jump and that kind of jump typically requires connections via the old coaching tree. Bob has no FBS experience, who really knows him in the FBS world?

Btw, Bob gets offered a 4 year deal at UConn for $4MM in total guaranteed salary he would be nutz not to take it when he makes in the 300s and has no connections.

@HC1987 - Lance Leipold went 109-6 at DII Wisc-Whitewater over 9 seasons before BUFFALO gave him the head coaching job. Buffalo, a MAC program - not a power school. And Leipold had three year at Nebraska on his resume to boot.

Another guy, Kalen DeBoer went 67-3 at Sioux Falls winning three NAIA championships in the 2000s before taking the OC position at FCS Southern Ill, then moving to FBS at Eastern Michigan as OC before moving to Fresno St as OC in 2017. He spent 6 seasons as an FBS (non power conf) OC before Frenso State gave him the full reigns in 2020 at age 46, I guess Kalen just isnt as astute as Bob Chesney.

Double his salary or bump him to 750K. I bet he jumps on it.

You know else was an astute guy as a HC at FCS program? K.C Keeler at Delaware. A decade later he is still an astute guy coaching in the FCS ranks. Generally speaking, you don't always have a plethora of offers when you're coaching at that level.

The guy that is the rare New England exception for making the great coaching leap is Chip Kelly and that worked after he logged eight seasons as the New Hampshire OC where he continually performed at the top of the nation in offense. ..... a top offense in windy, cold, dreary, slow footed New Hampshire. Don't think Chesney is the defensive version of Chip Kelly. Chip made the move to OC at Oregon at age 44 with no FBS experience whatsoever. The Chip Kelly story is like five standard deviations from the mean.

Correct. Moorehead had been a coach and coordinator at the FBS level before going to Fordham to get HC experience and then going to PSU to Miss St.

Completely different career paths.

Curt Cignetti would be a better options IMO. 88-29 overall 21-3 at JMU. Coached under Saban in 2007 and only loss more than 3 times in a season 3 times in his career.

Now there a guy waiting for a bigger offer than UConn.
Gotta get his foot in the DI somehow. We need to face it that if we want to see success we are going to be relegated to stepping stone status for coaches. Look at Cincinnati. They know their coaches are using them as a stepping stone so they hire based on that. They've seen success with everyone since Dantonio except Tuberville. Fickle has probably the best team Cincinnati has ever scene and most likely will be gone after this year if they go undefeated. Cignetti would be the perfect guy to get UConn back to winning, he moves on and we get the next up and comer to continue our success.

Whitewater is DIII. Only strengthens your argument though.

If people want your coach, it’s a compliment.

Most feel (particularly HC football people), addition by subtraction.

You do know - and Edsall is taking the bargain HC salary - UCONN would probably pay about $1.2m to 1.5m in Salary. You are jumping way over the MAC and most FCS ... and definitely most P5 Coordinator money on that. You cannot discount the dollar signs.

PLUS ... he is Salve Regina; Assumption; Holy Cross. Nothing says New England but those. Who will hire a guy who can dominate Eastern Mass recruiting?

Why does the Boneyard obsess over a coach very few has actually seen in action? Has he done a good job in the Patriot League? yes. This board wanted Joe Harasymiak from Maine a few years ago. The pattern is younger coach brings a team to play us from FCS and people lose their ****.
