Been to New Orleans ten times, including a bunch of JazzFests, but never saw him live. Totally bummed that I missed my chance. He was the best.
As I preach, “see ‘em while you can.”

He is foundational for me. Blessed that my family and I got to meet him and see him live dozens of times in a variety of venues and circumstances from coast to coast.

As original as they come.

I was gonna say I saw him in Hamden just a few years ago. Turns out it was 2007. He didn't mail it in, full band over 2 hours. Good time. He played this which also happens to my personal motto:

Yep. That was a great night. I went in with low expectations given the venue, but he totally delivered.

Unfortunately he's one I missed. Under-appreciated by the masses I think. Not a hit machine for the Spotify age. He hearkens to a time when people made quality non hit music on LPs and DJs who knew what was good, played it.

Ditto, think I'll see what I can find on youtube . Those first few albums in the late 60s and ealry 70s seem interesting. It seems he made an album per year from 1968 to 1975, impressive.

I really feel like that describes a seven year period starting around 1966 and going until 1973 or so. So many amazing artists. I feel like there was a resurgence of great underground bands about 20 years ago or so but I don't think any time period beats 67 to 70 as as far as volume of great under rated bands.

Been shuffling through so many great albums of his, but I keep coming back to In the Right Place. Every track is solid and then some. Backed by the Meters. Produced by Allen Toussaint. And a great album cover to boot! This one has always been a dark horse favorite of mine, but the whole album is really tremendous:
