Rene Portland dies after battle with cancer

Definitely wasn’t my favorite coach after the allegations (and confirmations) of homophobia, but I’m sad she died at a young age. She was one of the more successful coaches in the 90s and early 00s....had a number of very strong Penn State teams over the years and was a recognizable coach in women’s basketball who helped bring many fans to the sport. Penn State dropped off the map after she left. I hope her family is doing well.

Had a very nice coaching career; Was among a number of great coaches to usher in the modern era of women's college basketball. Yet her stance on gay ballplayers still baffles me. The revelation sent her career on a spiral from which she would never recover. Another other big faux pas was not affirmatively responding to a request to schedule an up and coming UConn program in 1989. Coach Auriemma turned to then Iowa coach C. Vivian Stringer and asked to play in her Christmas tournament. In that tournament, UConn got a measure of revenge by beating Penn State in overtime.

Very sad. Thoughts and prayers for her family.
