“There isn’t one thing that’s the same,” coach Geno Auriemma said of Walker. “Nothing. Everything’s different. How she looks, how she plays, how she shoots it. Everything. How aggressive she is. Everything’s different. There are some things, obviously, that she’s going to keep getting better at, but if you want to compare it to last year nothing’s the same. Nothing’s the same.”

"Practices were hard, there was a lot to learn, and Walker soon realized transitioning wouldn’t be as seamless as she had imagined. In Walker’s phone calls with Star Wills, who coached and trained her from a young age at Cap City Ballerz, she opened up about the challenges she was facing.

“For her, she was honest with herself and with me,” [Coach]Wills said. “She said it wasn’t easy, and that practices were harder than she thought they would be. And she would tell me that she’s going to be OK. She would say, ‘I’m going to be OK, I just have to have better practices.’ So when I would ask her why she wasn’t playing she would say ‘There’s a lot that I don’t know.’”

"It doesn’t matter who you ask — Auriemma, teammates, past coaches — everyone expects Walker to have a breakout season this year. And she knows it. She sees the expectations, feels the pressure mounting, and intends to deliver big.

“When you’re challenged you have to respond,” Walker said, “so I feel like this year will be full of responses.”

Walker had a double double in 26 minutes against Vanguard. Yet, I recall reading a few posts that were less than favorable about her play. Having high expectations is one thing, being unfair is something else.

I wish there was no expectations on her at all. Let her quietly go about her business and let the other four get all the headlines. She isn't going to lose her starting spot. Just relax and enjoy playing with some terrific teammates.

Rocky, I've reached my monthly free articles limit for the Courant already. It's November 8. I live in Chicago and don't even root for this team.

What have you done to me?!

Wipe your cookies and you'll probably get access. Sorry about that. The rest of the article is much better than I quoted too. ;)

I have four different browsers, three of which I use exclusively to look at Courant articles. Switch back and forth and rarely get locked out. I subscribed two years ago just for UConn wbb. But I live a thousand miles from Hartford, and there was just too much stuff that did not interest me.

To be clear, I just opened up a different browser and read it. I was just astonished/horrified at how much UConn content (UConntent?) I've been consuming.
Be careful. Easttexastrash started becoming a closet UConn fan. He finally had to stop coming to the BY when his skin actually started turning blue.

Having worked there for several years, I can assure you that they do not like blue in east Texas. More fond of gray, even after all these years!

I had a different opinion of Meg. I thought she looked a lot better--good enough to start, for sure, but not great (yet). She may still defer to the seniors a bit too much, but she's really good. It's hard to evaluate someone on 26 minutes. I'd like to see her score in the low post and/or slash a little more. Make no mistake that Meg is a very strong rebounder. As Geno notes, she'll get better over the course of the season.

I watched the Vanguard game a 2nd time on uconnhuskeygames. You can always evaluate players better the 2nd time you watch a game. One thing that I was struck by is all the little things that Megan did really well. On defense she had a strong defensive stance, moved well and shut off penetration to the basket. She boxed out on the defensive boards and attacked the offensive boards. She made a number of very good post entry passes and took good shots in the flow of the offense. The only thing I would have liked to see her do is finish stronger at the basket. I’m sure that will come in time.

Megan gets it, and she’s going to be very good this season.

What UCONN has lost in height they picked up in quickness and speed! With CW joining Meg in the starting lineup with KLS, Crystal Dangerfield, & Pheesa, they will be very hard to stop offensively and defensively by teams with tree-top bigs! The first 5 and first G & F off the bench will run and defend at supersonic speed and frustrate the ND's, Baylor's, SoCar's, L'ville's, into "sucking wind" in the 1st or 2nd periods!
I doubt there's a faster team in Division I!

Megan looked good against Vanguard. When she start hitting her layups consistently, she will be a problem. Her athleticism is amazing. I agree 100% with what RShermVikes.

I would like to believe that Geno's remarks say it all. When do you think he might say the same about Lexi gordon?
