"The NCAA Division I Council announced Wednesday it was extending the recruiting dead period for all sports through April 15."

"For basketball, this announcement means there will be no in-person evaluation during the high school season, and the scheduled live period of April 9-11, 2021, will also be off limits for coaches. There is another live evaluation period scheduled for April 23-25, 2021."

This will not hurt the top teams or conferences. It will hurt the lower tier teams in some of the top conferences and many of the mid-majors and below.

They need to protect coaches from themselves. Nobody should be on a plane or in a gym right now.

How dead is “dead?” I have not followed wbb recruiting long enough to know.

I know that one of SCar’s top 15 recruits lives in Columbia and will probably make numerous “unofficial” visits. Another lives less than an hour away and probably has numerous high school chums who attend the university. Another is nearby in Georgia. The others are more distant.

So, a Betts is going to have to reach into her parent’s pockets to visit SCar or UConn during this season “unofficially.”

will recruiting be more regional this year? Will FaceTime replace visits?

The NCAA dead period prohibits ANY in person contact whether on campus or away. If a kid wants to visit a campus to see her friends she can do that. But the basketball offices and all staff are off limits. And a kid visiting unofficially would be paying their own way in any event and would probably not waste their time doing that until after the dead period is lifted. The school can only pay for one official visit per player.

paying their own way was kinda my point. Our two in state prospects ( more if you include 2023//24) and the Georgia prospect CAN easily afford a Saturday overnight with friends and attend a Sunday game. A Betts can afford to visit some Western schools unofficially.
