As we head into the home stretch of a season most programs would be thrilled to have but pales somewhat in comparison to the previous few years, it's worth reviewing the recruiting classes that have produced our sophomore-through-senior classes.

2008:

EDD- transferred out before playing for UConn
Caroline- injuries have reduced her availability to play, as well as her effectiveness
Tiff- has played better than the #11 player in her class, but not at a level to make up for the loss of EDD (not saying she should be obligated to- just a statement)
Buck- physical attributes are obvious, but hasn't developed into more than a situational player

Summary: four recruits, one very good player, one sporadically available/effective player, one situational bench contributer, one transfer.

2009:

Kelly- defensive stopper that has developed into the 1996-98 era Dennis Rodman on the court when the team could really use a Scottie Pippen. Scottie could score four points or 40 as needed, but his defense was always consistent. Dennis just wasn't scoring, period.

Summary: one recruit, one hard-working defensive specialist

2010:

Bria- developing into a versatile guard and a star. If she can develop either little more consistency from outside over the course of a season or a few more ways to score, sky's the limit.
Samarie- transferred out in January of 2011
Stef- appeared headed for stardom after first season, but has at best not progressed in her sophomore campaign
Lauren- has not been able to contribute significantly during games as of this point
Michala- high school injuries have prevented her from developing physically sufficient to contribute significantly through this season.

Summary: five recruits, one star, one enigma, two benchwarmers (not trying to be mean or hurtful, just where those two kids are at this stage), one transfer

Grand total: 10 recruits, one rising star, one very good player, one enigma, one oft-injured sentimental favorite, one defensive specialist, one situational bench player, two benchwarmers, two transfers.

Lesson 1- This team is pretty much where it should be, if not somewhat better. Stellar returns from the 2006 and 2007 classes delayed the relatively bumpy season we're seeing now, but it shouldn't be surprising.

Lesson 2- The potential of the 2011 and 2012 classes, on top of the better players from 2010, make it easy not to sweat the Class of 2013. But I'm sweating it. We don't necessarily need superstars...but if we end up with a number of solid kids with Tiff/Kelly ceilings, we can't expect them to be EDD and Maya as seniors. This is why Geno is pressing hard for Diamond right now- her ceiling is in that "national top five for plural seasons" tier.

Any thoughts on why Buck has not developed more? Lack of skill, basketball knowledge, confidence? Any thoughts on why Dolson has kind of plateaued? This is a serious question and not some passive-aggressive question. Does UCONN have a coach with extensive experience in developing post players/centers? Was Charles just THAT talented and only needed motivational help?

1. Buck's issues are between the ears, IMO. She's an impressive physical specimen and has all the tools to be playing more.

2. Dolson's issues are also between the ears, honestly. I think there was too much pressure on her heading into this season, and she started pressing as a result. Add to that the lack of effective entry passing and the constant double-teaming due to UConn not having another interior player on offense for other teams to worry about, and she's just been taken out of her game. I'm really hoping that she can get her groove back, and it might be that Breanna Stewart helps Stef more than any other player on the team.

3. Yes, Tina was that talented. She was the #1 player in the class and born to play basketball.

4. Chris Dailey is responsible for post players, with Marisa Moseley also involved. CD's resume along the lines of developing posts is beyond reproach.

Great job alexrgct! Couldn't agree with you more. We have had some great teams, but sometimes we just need to be honest about it too. I am very interested in seeing how workouts go in preaseason next year. Some of the incoming talent "could" be "more" talented players, and potential "stars". Sacrificing early season continuity to develop great talent for march? We shall see.

Don't forget that highly regarded center (Jessica ....?) who decided to back to Australia or wherever.

McCormick. Think she might even have gone back to Netball.

Excellent analysis by Alex.

Some other points - I believe that the 2009 class was impacted by recruits looking at EDD and Jess McCormack (a NZ national team member) and saying, not me - I'll never see the floor, only the bench, till they graduate. Some recruits possibly signed early elsewhere due to that.

I think that may be true because I remember Geno saying he would never have a one person class again - I think it was after K. Johnson's transfer. But, he did, Kelly! (REALLY glad we have her!)

And no, I am not faulting EDD, just looking at the next class down the road, and the consequences.

Nice work, Alex. We missed you.

Looking at the realities--transfers, injuries, kids who don't develop as much as you would like--I think it is clear that we need a larger class for 2013, rather than a smaller one. I like 4: Diamond, Erica, Saniya, and Karlie. Taya is certainly welcome, as well.

I would be very happy with that class. DD is a rock star, and the other three all have a chance to contribute at a high level, even if none achieve rock star status. :)
