I think it went off the rails at a particular point when Irons hires some particular people to deal with Statham. If you see it, you'll recognize it. Wasn't at all necessary except as a means to allow our protagonist to remain a protagonist. There were much more subtle, clever and less violent ways to do that and the film should have chosen them.
