This does align to stories from the comics, so wasn't [I]entirely[/I] invented for the film.  Of course the Yakuza are involved, as well as a group of ninjas that have served the old man's family for generations.  All in all, this is pretty good.  The focus is on the characters and story, not on CGI or action sequences (with one exception).
