Some of the movies centered around cooking/chefs can be entertaining. I really enjoyed "100 Foot Journey" and "No Reservations" was decent. Last night watched "Burnt." Hmm...didn't really care for it. Bradley Cooper's character is just so hard to get behind, he's such a jerk. There were some big names in small roles or even throw away characters, like Emma Thompson and Uma Thurman. But it was unforgivable to me that Alicia Vikander and Lily James were on screen for probably less than 5 minutes combined. Vikander at least had some significance to the story, but James was absolutely 100% wasted in this movie.

One Night in Miami (2020) - This film is based on a 2013 stage play by Kemp Powers, who also wrote the screenplay to this film. It is a fictionalized account of a meeting at a hotel by Malcolm X, Cassius Clay (shortly before he changed his name to Muhammed Ali), Jim Brown, and Sam Cooke on the night that Cassius Clay took the heavyweight boxing title away from Sonny Liston in 1964. Aside from a few odd scenes, this is mostly a talk (sometimes heated, especially between Malcolm X and Cooke) among the four principles on their perceived best ways to advance the cause of civil rights and to improve plight of Blacks living in America. Not a great movie, but I did find this to be an interesting discussion of the various race issues at hand, and thought the four leads all did well with their material.

Don't Look Up - While alternating between some decent laughs and some tangible frustration with the unfolding events I couldn't escape the feeling that the whole proceedings were coming off as pretty one note. I guess I don't really have any faith that any side would deal with our impending doom effectively. But putting that aside I was entertained.

Klaus - A beautifully animated and well told Santa Claus origin story. It might enter the holiday movie rotay.

Mortal - ! appreciated the use of Norse mythology and thought it a clever conceit. But the execution was clearly on the cheap, the locations were used well to tell the story but the effects were very poor. Not necessarily a deal breaker but the central romance unfortunately felt super forced which made later events fall flat.

PAW Patrol: The Movie - Chase is on the case! Dad is mostly asleep.

Darkest Hour - Something like this must be an actor's dream role, right? Just two hours of scenery chewing by Oldman and he did a great job transforming into the character. Well done if not entirely historically accurate.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage - I quite enjoyed the first one. This was more of the same. Entertaining interplay between Hardy and Venom. Wish they had gone with someone other than Woody tho, a bit old to be playing a ~40yo.

No Time to Die - Other than Casino Royale, all of Craig's other Bond movies are a blur to me so I barely remembered the love interest in this one. Probably would've helped to revisit the last couple before hand. I enjoyed it for the action and set pieces. I doubt it'll stick out in my mind the further we get away from his portrayal tho. Very curious where they go from here considering the end...

Power of the Dog (Netflix 2021) - Another highly-rated and highly-recommended dark, plodding drama/thriller for which I had higher expectations than were warranted.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Jesse Plemons are brothers running a ranch in Montana in 1925. Plemons‘s character marries a widow played by Kirsten Dunst, and she has a son who appears a bit “light in his loafers” as they used to say. Cumberbatch doesn’t like her or the son and is upset with Plemons for marrying her, and then things get strange for reasons we don’t fully understand—at least for a while.

Weird backstory and drama/trauma gradually (and only partly) unfold over two hours, during which I kept waiting for something—anything—to happen.

Stunning scenery and excellent acting by Cumberbatch and newcomer (to me at least) Kodi Smit-McPhee. Plemons played what I gather is his standard laconic character because it seemed the same as his manner in Game Night. It makes for an interesting presence but kind of a Johnny One-note. I’m not a huge Dunst fan and this didn’t do anything to change that.

Interesting twist but takes way too long to get there. And there are way too many things that are touched upon but barely explored, if at all.

Cumberbatch and the kid are great and I’m guessing they’ll receive some nominations, but I don’t get the raves for this one.

Don’t Look Up -

Last night, my in-laws said everyone should see this movie.

Just finished watching it and similar to what @Mano said, I found the movie too one-noted.

I get it’s a satire but it was too literal for my taste.

I did like the cast though: Leo, Chalamet, Morgan were excellent while Lawrence, Hill, Streep and Blanchett were good characters. The script itself was good, some very funny moments, but I don’t recommend.

Funny thing about that... we got a surprise yesterday.

I wonder how much bigger it would've needed to be to wipe out a town or two?

Funny with laughs, good cast, good characters, good script, entertaining... yet "don't recommend".

Look through the movies listed in this thread and count the hours BYers have wasted watching movies they found awful. And consider it's now Year 3 of a pandemic. And y'all don't want to encourage others to be entertained and laugh for a couple hours?

I don't get y'all sometimes.

I laughed out loud when I got to @Hey Adrien! 's "but I don't recommend." After sitting through the much-heralded and much-recommended The Unforgivable and Power of the Dog, it's hysterical to me that someone would not recommend a movie that--by their own description--is very funny, entertaining, well-cast and well-scripted.

I think the reactions are the function of a few interrelated things. First, given the real-life events of the past few years, satire is increasingly difficult to pull off. Many of the criticisms I've seen and read are to the effect that the movie is too "on the nose," but I don't see how you avoid that when real-life events and people are as extreme as they have been. It seems people forgot what satire is.

Second, the media has now been trained that everything must be bothsidered, and obviously many people--including many in this thread--have been trained to expect the same. They're like Kate's parents when they wouldn't let her in the house because they thought her "truthiness" was too divisive, and they were in favor of the jobs the comet would provide. We simply cannot have a lampooning of one side--unless it's the liberal-leaning side, of course. But if liberals want to bring along others, they have to make fun of themselves, too. I would have thought that the portrayal of the media would suffice for that element, but apparently that only made many in the media strive to call for more bothsidering, in a vain attempt to regain credibility from a crowd that will never believe them no matter what they publish.

Finally, high expectations are always the kiss of death. It's a good movie, not a great one. I had the benefit of seeing it without knowing much about it beforehand, and without reading any reviews to tell me how I should feel about it. If someone tells you that it's hysterical and you have to see it, you're likely going to be disappointed.

All that said, I'm surprised that Jennifer Lawrence is nominated for her role and that Cate Blanchett is not.

This falls clearly into camp 3 for me. Personally speaking, I liked Tick, Tick....Boom a lot more based on my tastes and recommended it as such.

Did I miss a West Side Story review here?
From first frame it screams Spielberg and DP Kaminsky. $17 in IMAX. Pay the extra.
What an amazing score. Probably my favorite Bernstein work.

Somewhat re-imagined. Fleshes out the actual west side ",story". Rita Mareno only "name" star....before release. Riff and Maria are scene stealers IMHO. True enough to the original. Shot too bright for my idea of the period/neighborhood, until the last 30 minutes.

Worth the 2.5 hours

Tick, Tick...Boom. Watched this last night and loved it. It's a musical based on Jonathan Larson's life prior to writing "Rent". Rent is my favorite musical and the music and vibe of the movie have Rent's fingerprints all over it. And Andrew Garfield really impressed me with his singing and theatric abilities.

It's a musical. It's based off Rent. If you don't like or know much about either? Don't bother. If you do? I think you'd really enjoy it.
Tick, Tick…Boom was great. Thanks for this recommendation. I loved it also, and I don’t love musicals and didn’t know a ton about Rent, except that my oldest daughter was in an abbreviated version of it as part of a revue in high school.

Definitely the most award-worthy performance and movie I’ve seen this year. Garfield was outstanding and it’s a great story, told very effectively. The actor who played Michael was also excellent, as was Susan. I was moved.

Thanks for speaking on my behalf and you’re summing up my sentiments better than I would.

All other people on here made great points, ones I would have loved to discuss in person over a drink, but I don’t have the energy to do so on an online forum.

Super specific objective critique, I have trouble with any comedy (my favorite type of movie) much longer than 90 minutes. If we somehow cut 30 minutes from Don’t Look Now, I might have loved it.

West Side Story

As always, appreciate the tabulation efforts, as it no doubt is a time consuming process. Did notice there was a mistake on my tabulation, as there are 21 movies on my list, not 20. Of course, the first time I counted the movies for myself in the above posting, I came up with 22 for myself, which just goes to show you how easy it is to make a mistake in counting. And I was just counting for myself, not everyone who posted during the course of the year. Whatever the case, 20 or 21 movies watched, it is all still in the same neighborhood. Anyway, whatever the number that winds up next to me, thanks for your efforts in doing this.

I will be alerting Price Waterhouse that we will no longer be in need of their services post haste.

Being the Ricardos. 2021 Prime. So, the story of Lucile Ball and Desi Arnez, starting Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem as the leads. This is an interesting film and I quite like the use of three real people to provide commentary at the start and key moments. People who were actually there and are played by actors in the film. The focus is on on critical week in the making of I Love Lucy. But there are flashbacks that fill out the story of how they met and how the show came to exist. It's quite interesting. One early comment from the real folks involved was certainly interesting: 60 million weekly viewers. In the early 50s. There is no modern equivalent, even in total numbers, let alone as a % population. Both lead actors do a good job, and JK Simmons is great as William Frawley (Fred Mertz). I found it quite an enjoyable film that delves into the story people we also know and remember at some level.
Watched this last night and thought it was very good as well.

Thoughts on no subtitles for the Spanish only part of the movie ? Or do you speak Spanish ?

Watched "The Alpinist" yesterday and "14 Peaks" today. Both interesting seeing climbers pushing the limits of what is humanly possible. Very different in how they went about their pursuits.

14 peaks should have been a series, it felt too rushed at times. Like a 3 minute segment explaining climbing K2. Enjoyed the alpinist, guy almost had a death wish given the extremes he went
Watched The Alpinist last night. Amazing. Great watch. Visually stunning and emotionally compelling. And terrifying (especially for Mrs. 8893, who has vertigo).
