Season 3 Comes out this week.
Question for people who read fiction. If each season is based off a book already written, how much interest is there in seeing if the season stays true to the book? At a minimum the main characters and outcomes stay the same, no? Or do the TV writers get full autonomy to develop the season independent of how the book plays out?

I suppose the answer this question would vary from individual to individual, but by and large, I would expect that fans of a book series wants to see it replicated as accurately as possible. Once TV writers start freelancing, it's easy for them to lose the core characteristics of the original work. Reacher season one stayed very true to the first book, and it was enjoyed by fans of the books and newcomers to the character. Reacher season two drifted from the novel it was based on and suffered for it, in my opinion, but, I am a big fan of the book series.

The book that the third season is based on was a good one. I am looking forward to it.

My issue with the second season was less about sticking religiously to the plot and more that Reacher was less a defender of justice (as he sees it) and more an offensive juggernaut who seemed to take pleasure in producing the most pain possible. There was less humor and less humanity. YMMV.

I agree, but I think that perception was caused by the decision to walk away from the novel and add more "made for TV" moments for the show. Instead of developing the character and seeing his motivation, as was done very well in the first season, it seemed to me like there were more moments that or based upon "wouldn't it be cool if Reacher did this".

My other complaint about season two, which I've posted about previously, was that every member of the 110th special investigators basically became a mini Reacher. They were different in each brought their own strengths. Again, instead of focusing on the individual character development, I think the focus was choreographing large scale fights, where everyone gets to have their moment beating up the bad guy.

In my opinion, the series would have been better serve to go through the books in order. In the second and third box, reacher is given a house which he ultimately gives up. That helps clarify that he's made a deliberate choice to live a unique lifestyle, rather than being a violent homeless ex vet.

That said, I'm a fan of the series and I am looking forward to season three.

I didn't start yet but looks like 3 episodes are available.

I'll probably hold off until after the end of the season. I did this last year and it kind of worked out since I'm always looking for stuff to watch... after the end of the season.

Season 1 was great. Season 2 I couldn’t even get through it.

I've enjoyed the first two episodes. My biggest complaint would be about the actress playing the female DEA agent. I find her attempt at a Boston accent to be distracting.
I was wondering about that. As someone from nowhere near Boston it didn't raise my hackles, but I wasn't sure how close she was getting to accurate. She's a Brit.

I think she's a fun character. Who would've guessed after watching Sixteen Candles that Michael Anhony Hall would carve out a career playing baddies.

Anyway, so far S3 is much improved over S2.

I was kind of shocked seeing him, when did he get so old?

Yeah I like the female DEA agent.

S3 a big winner in my estimation.

I laughed out loud when DEA agent, seeing Reacher walking up the road in just boxers, says @@ck Me. Classic.

I don't mind her accent. If she talked like former HCJC I would have to turn subtitles on.

It's a slow day for me, so I'm going to rewatch first 3 episodes.

Reacher and the DEA agent are gonna hook up, right? I haven't read all the books, but it seems like he always gets with somebody. Kinda like James Bond.

Only one episode in. My first thought about her (I didn't even realize that was an attempt at a Boston accept, might more accurately be a bad Maine accent) was "oh, I know who Reacher is going to hook up with this season".

Episode 1 was good. I like the shift for him to something a little different.

Ep. 4 was mostly flashbacks, kind of lost the momentum from the first 3. Maybe necessary for deeper understanding of what's going on...

I don't like weekly releases for streaming. Dump all episodes at once. Streaming services got us hooked on binging, then take it away whenever they want to. Don't like it.

Ep. ended w/ a song from Screaming Trees. Haven't heard them in a while. It was this song. I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess this is the only music video ever filmed at the Ellensburg Rodeo grounds. My college town.

Plot holes.

Like for starters, how does Quinn not know who Reacher is. Unless he does…

How would Quinn/Beck not know that there really isn’t a rival gang out there? Particularly if Quinn was the one who kidnapped Beck’s son the first time?

Alan Ritchson is quite a bit different than his Reacher persona. I wasn't aware of him until fairly recently (Above the Shadows, indie movie that didn't get any attention but I enjoyed). Looking at his imdb he's been in some older stuff I've seen as bit characters. He's also been one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and both Aquaman and Hawk in various DC based TV shows. Anyway I thought this interview was entertaining.

I finally finished this. I liked it. It was much better than season two and closer to the books. Yes, the "big" fight did drag on But it was generally pretty good. Overall, I'd say it was a satisfying watch.
