When conference realignment or Power Five talks come about it's the presidents who do most of the talking. They are the true movers and shakers, but certainly the AD plays a vital role. UConn needs to keep improving its football program while maintaining its national stature in men's and women's basketball, which between them have won 14 NCAA titles, 10 by the women.

But clearly it's all about the AD and we are screwed because of the timing of Warde's departure, right???

We have to be the kings of bad timing

New president
New AD (replacing the worst AD in the history of college athletics)
PP era (losing a lot)
BBall postseason ban

...all happened at exactly the right time for us to look terrible during the realignment. Obviously these things didnt all happen at exactly the same time, but none of it was settled, and it all made us look bad/unstable at a time when good/stable would have been a great sign to the conferences who were in need of another team or 2.

Bad timing, bad luck, whatever. It just all couldn't have happened at a worse time. 2 years earlier, or maybe 2 (ish) years later, and maybe things work out (or at least we're looked at differently during the discussions).

Here is where Rachel Rubin is the ONLY choice for acting AD. She is in the CR loop...knows what is going on, is directly involved in the game plan and execution of that plan. She is also going to be the one who even if the new AD and Warde were there together for any amount of time before he left would answer any and all questions about CR plan and help the new AD with that plan. This isn't like the last time...she has been, is, and will continue to be directly involved in the CR conversation/plan.

Her being the existing Chief of Staff for Herbst means she is perfectly in tune with Herbst's strategies for CR and how to execute them. Rubin's AD connections help too but aren't as important as her knowledge of the president's plans.

Her role is to just be the bridge to the next AD and keep the ball rolling in all aspects of the athletic department. Obviously we're all focused on CR but she seems plugged in to what should be happening on the day to day stuff as well so that whatever time is between when Warde leaves and the new AD comes in, won't be wasted between time. She'll keep things going as if Warde was still here.

Rubin and Herbst = 2 smart cookies:):):):):).

Not sure a 37% tuition hike over 4 years, aimless out of control spending and presiding over the demise of UConn's national stature qualifies as a smart cookie. The most classic line is that the tuition increases will fund more financial aid. Simply stunning.

Perhaps you can enlighten us as to this "demise of UConn's national stature" that we seemed to miss?

1) UConn's national demise is a figment of your imagination
2) Trends in tuition are not a UConn problem, they're an American university problem...

They are a national priorities problem, not a university problem.

Is it lost on everyone that every year the state cuts another 10% from the fungible budget?

That's what I meant...it's a problem that's relevant to all universities, not just uconn. Didn't mean to make it sound as if the primary blame lied with the institutions themselves. It's a number of things, one of which is budget cuts in higher ed like you mentioned. We're getting screwed by the state which makes no sense considering that uconn is one of the state's best resources.

When the football team is winning and the MBB are in Final Fours its a lot easier for legislators to get on board the budget train.

I could connect the dots here but that belongs in the Cesspool.

More to the point of the thread, we do need someone to stand on the roof of the Gampel and talk up our athletic department. A lot of folks were wary of Warde because he came from Buffalo. He was a great candidate but some perceived him as coming from a bad athletic place. Love to get someone with a higher profile pedigree.

A candidate is not defined by their current position only. His pedigree was fine when you look at the entire body of work.
