question re iphone

Hi techies; I have found an iphone, under circumstances that do not allow any ordinary search for the owner. My question is, is there any way it can be opened to maybe get a clue as to the owner so as to return it, or if that is not possible to use it? I know less than zilch about apple products. Thanks for any advice.
